Are knee spike counters legal in MMA competition? I have not seen anything specifically barring it's use.

Well if this is what you're talking about:

Then I don't see why it wouldn't be legal as long as you don't hit them in the sack.

They do it all the time to the legs against the fence. I don't know whats illegal about it.

It's blocking a kick with the knee instead of the shin.

you dont check with your knee. What your thinking of is checking with the upper shin, right below the knee. Yes, its legal and hurts like a mother.

Isn't that where your meant to check? That way it's the thick end of your shin vs the thin end of their shin (down near their ankle).

^ Pretty much what I was thinking. Only reason you tend to go lower is it gives you a greater margin for error. Intercepting a kick by spiking their inner thigh is definitely a valid technique.

I think TS means stepping in and kneeing the inside thigh of an incoming roundhouse instead of checking it. Malaipet showed this in his DVD somewhere I think. you better have great accuracy with your knees or you'll be eating roundhouses to the body/support leg if you miss.

as far as checking with the kneecap, some people advocate it but I don't do it. my shinbone right below the kneecap is built up a bit now from checking so I just use that (like a normal person lol).

valid but tough to pull off...smaller margin for error than a shin check.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Though it is easier to do as cross check than same side.

now that i think about it, it makes sense. the same side check would probably lead you to knee their incoming shin bone whereas the cross check knee is from the other side of your body and wouldnt reach as far...would prob land on the inner thigh (or inside of their knee) more just because of the distance it would have to cover.

Oh definitely. The timing on that has to be perfect. Personally I much rather just teep the hip.

Checking a kick with the knee will likely cause a shin break. That's why I was wondering if it was legal.
