Can they be sustainable?

Are we getting information or publicity regarding their usefulness and environmentally cleanliness?

Here's a knothead discussing some of the aspects of EVs.

On a sidenote, anyone shorting Tesla?

Back in 1993 I had a Honda civic beater car that got 42-45mpg (calculated via the pump on shit regular)

I dare say that motherfucker was more environmentally friendly than your average Tesla. But it's hard to find anyone who makes vehicles like that now.

Are EVs just the latest sham or what?

Ok retards: discuss, argue, sidetrack, derail, and totally miss the point.

Go!

I don't know. there seems to be a finite amount of Cobalt and "conflict minerals" like "lithium in the world.

I suppose if battery life for vehicles can be made to last longer and more efficient I suppose it is a possibility.

it also depends what type of occupation you have, I know most construction workers NEED to have a pick up truck, and something with significant horsepower and torque.

if all you need a vehicle for is to get from point A to point B, then yea, maybe and EV is your solution. for other scenarios you may need a different vehicle.

Can't watch video right now; is it about range dropping in very cold weather?

If so, here is some related news:

South Korea fines Tesla $2.2 million over EV range disclosures
Antitrust regulators say Tesla failed to point out that driving ranges are shorter in cold weather.

In the near future I expect the EV makers to get the cold weather range problem fixed. I do think EVs will only rise in popularity because , aside from mitigating pollution, electric motors are vastly more efficient than IC engines.

Depends on the grid that powers them….if we burn fossil in order to charge, they are actually causing bigger problems than before..

Yes but it won't be like how people think where EVs just replace everything and it all stays the same. Deep changes/disruptions in key industries like information, transport, materials, food will combine to revolutionize how societies consume matter and energy. Most people in big cities won't "own" cars. It will not be a one for one substitution.

They are until the Chinese run out of African slaves to mine the cobalt. This shit is sad and we don’t have to do it this way again but here we go
it's a great metal for batteries, but isn't essential for an EV battery. looks like it could be phased out or reduced use. or we just put more attention on those mines and somehow implement better conditions there (easier said than done i know)

How do you think they're going to fix cold weather range reduction? Batteries drain faster when they're cold. That's true of all batteries.

EV's are a far better choice going forward because they "can" be fueled by things other than fossil fuels. The fact that so much electricity is still generated by fossil fuels today is not the EV's fault, and that will undoubtedly change in the future (yay fusion!). And even when the electricity is all made from fossil fuels, it's far easier to capture pollution and waste energy at a large scale power plant than it is in a mobile combustion engine.

It's true that battery technology is a problem currently, but there are many promising avenues to pursue that will undoubtedly solve these problems. It really seems like a temporary issue.

EV's are also way simpler and cheaper to produce and maintain (much cheaper in the long run), have better performance, and range is increasing year over year.

I don't think so. I believe it's a bridging technology tbh, maybe for 30-50 years, with the existing battery concept. If a disruptive battery tech comes along like a scalable biological battery, sure, but the current tech supply is limited, and therefore is simply not sustainable in the long run.

Perhaps in the distant future it will be hydrogen cell vehicles, or if fusion is ever mastered, fusion.

OP, you should fix your thread title to make it consistent with your youtube link.
Two different questions.....Are EVs the Future (Yes) vs are they Sustainable.

I don't know what you have available where you are but I have a wide choice of petrol cars that will do 60mpg all day long. My fiat 500 company car did 75mpg, it's like it ran on fresh air.

If you live in a city and don't go anywhere maybe. Seems stupid to get one if you need to tow anything or enjoy long road trips.
