Hey guys. I was thinking of shelling out $200 for the Chris Haueter street fighting DVDs but I am a little hesitant after finding out they are 7 years old! Has anyone seen these videos, are they worth it? Are they too dated?

You feel there have been some pretty major advancements in street fighting since 2000?

Compare the first Gracie instructionals to the stuff coming out now, and I would say yeah.

That is true, but there is a reason that I might get them anyway. I have up to date material to cover technical submission wrestling and street fighting but his DVDs have stuff I don't have. It deals with dirtly fighting. It is suppose to be all about little additions to your jiu jitsu ,in a real fight, to protect your groin, your eyes, and other vital "cheap shots". So my thinking is that Ball Grabbing and Eye Gouging remains as basic as it was in 2000. Let me know if you disagree. Thanks

It does indeed, therefore, you don't need a $200 set of tapes to teach you how to protect your balls

Ah i really didn't like watching them, but then again i was completely disinterested in self-defense. That said, the technqiues and things he pointed out were pretty useful. Goes over the effective use of grips to protect yourself and looks at all the jiujitsu positions in a street context. I felt like most of it would come naturally to you after grappling a lot though, since it was mostly all about controlling your opponent on the tape i watched.

I assume you're talking about the Rorion and Royce tapes (which incidentally the first two were done before the first UFC in 93/94) because Cesars are top notch.

And I think that may be more down to holding back on what was shown than any change in styles.

Was there any eye openers about groin and eye protection on the tape? I was always concerned about the easy access someone would have to my groin if I had him cross mounted in a fight. Also, if I have someone in my guard, I would love to know what his advice is for a person who simply reaches down and attacks your balls. The guy you're fighting doesn't even have to be a dirty fighter, if you're beating your oponents face in, his survival mode will kick in and he'lll take whatever option he has. A poster said that I don't have to spend $200 to have someone tell me to protect my balls, but maybe there are ways to do it without giving up you possitional control. At this point I would probably freak out and go to grab his hand (giving him an easy opening for knee escapes, etc.) I think my eyes would be easier to defend while still keeping a hold on the guy.

I'm training with Chris Haueter in about 2 weeks, I'll be sure not to ask him any of that!

The tapes are aimed at ways of applying BJJ on the street, how to use tee shirt chokes for example, and while they cover ways of protecting yourself watching them will not mean your nads are guaranteed to be protected on the street (now there's something I didn't think I'd say this morning).

I found it, I knew I read it somewhere! This is an excerpt from the Haueter street fighting review I read;

The value of this tape set is their true function in real combat. Chris lays a simple format of how to adjust your BJJ game when someone is hitting you and attacking vital targets such as your groin. You will learn to address the issue of how your groin is susceptible in the various positions such as cross sides, knee on stomach, etc. Once you embrace this concept it really tightens up your jits game. From a sport perspective you always want to be tight on your opponent and the longer you train you truly understand the value of this.
