Is there an app for android that could just connect and play files from your home network?

Have a look for 'iMediaShare' I know its on iOs but its probably on Android too works great, you can stream or transfer files on it.

How's that new job working out, Z?

Any app could be free as long as your phone is rooted. I used to download paid APKs, play for hours but I grown tired of it.

As for what you need, no idea. I have MobileGo, no need for a USB connection to backup/restore, transfer files. It connects through Wifi. Probably the best Android-Windows manager for phones.

And I use ps3 media server on my pc. Works flawlessly.

I use ES File Explorer to stream audio and videos from my PC to phones running Android. The PC and phones are both connected to my home wifi network.

Take a look at plex.

I think Plex costs a few dollars ($4 maybe?), but it's definitely worth it. We use apple, so I only had to buy once for all our devices. Plex is free with the Xbox/PS3 too as well.

Play MP4's though, no AVI. Will MKV's too. At least, last time I checked.

The Xbox sometimes struggles with some streaming media for some reason, but the Xbox Plex App works great on these occasions.

Works on Android and IOS (Ipad, Phones, Samsung Tablet). Some Smart TV's have Plex too. So once you set up your home Plex library on your computer, there's many options to use it watch your shows.

I definitely recommend.

Install universal media player on you comp and stream it through the video app on your phone.

that sounds like what I'm looking for
If you're main aim is to stream audio and video files to the device, then what you want is to set up a DLNA or UPnP server on your home network using your PC, then use an app that can receive the stream from this media server to the device. The transfer speeds are much higher, enabling a higher bitrate and therefore video quality, and if the device doesn't natively support the format, then it's much easier to get live-stream decoding working using software like this.

Plex is an example of media server software. The PC end is free. The Android side costs $5 (or, if you want to stream media from your PC to another proprietary device like an Xbox, then you'll need the subscription-based Plex Pass). On the free side XBMC is king for the back-end on the PC, and you could try a slew of free front-end DLNA/UPnP apps on Android like BubbleUPnP.

ES File Explorer will connect to a home network server if you've set one up in Windows that operated on the STMP protocol. This is effectively a local mail server. You can manage files over WiFi between the network and the Android device like it was a normal file explorer, not just media files, but it sucks for media.

Check out Edco's thread in the VG forum if you want to learn more about media server software.
