What's stopping a fighter from having a supplement on hand, in case they fail a drug test, that has the banned substance?

Respect for the USADA is stopping a fighter.

Still seems like a possible loophole, not very big but also not completely impossible.
What if a fighter somehow knows that a supplement is actually tainted?
He thought about taking it, sended it to another lab than USADA's for a few bucks and they tell him that there is some stuff in it.
He buys another one, same result.
Now he simply takes that stuff per injection and points towards the supplement if he fails a test.

Probably not very plausible but also not impossible imo.

That's a nice loop hole but they'd still probably suffer the same fate if they didnt. Just bc you have an over the counter supplement with a banned substance shouldn't excuse you.

They buy a separate sample/s of the product. Unless it fails too, for the same substance.... You've obviously doctored your sample.

They go and buy it themselves and test it.

Because it's on the label. Just because it's banned for fighters doesn't mean it's banned to the general public.

The stuff people get in trouble for is usually (but not always) illegal to even include in a supplement. Supplement companies sometimes include illegal and unlisted ingredients so that they actually, you know, work. Since supplements normally are garbage and have nothing other than a placebo effect, and can sometimes help you get fat.

So, for this plan to work, you'd have to spike your own supplements, which could easily lead to you getting caught since no other samples of the supplement would have the PED. Or you'd have to get inside info from the supplement companies that they were making a spiked batch, which is highly unlikely for obvious reasons.

if its on the label then they couldnt use it as a defence. They are supposed to check things like that.

If it's on the label, they really don't have an excuse. It's when they don't know it's tainted that they have some potential for an out. @dimspace with the fast fingers!

If Victor Conte was still in the game, he would have them doing this shit for sure.

I saw something on a Russian swimmer who did this at the Olympics. Bought something at GNC but didn't check the label. Got suspension reduced. But fighters are tested by a different organization.

Because they'll still be suspended for 6 months minimum, they still will have the results of the fight overturned if caught, they'll still lose any win bonus or POTN bonus if they make it to their scheduled fight...if they don't make the fight then they don't get paid and will be out of work for a minimum of half a year.

It's not like they get away free for a tainted supplement, they simply get severe reduction in punishment as opposed to a typical PED violation.

It’s surprising how many people don’t understand what a “tainted supplement” actually is and the process used to determine an athlete’s guilt.

That's what makes it a calculated risk. Obviously the goal is still to not get caught, but teams should have their own tests run to find out which supplements are tainted to have them on hand in case of a failed test.

So a fighter should just buy 1 of every supplement out there on the market, pay out of their own pocket to have all of them tested, and hope he comes across one that doesnt have an ingredient on the label where that ingredient is banned(oh, and it has to be the ingredient for which he would be getting busted for, and not some random other one)? Seems like a whole lot of work and money. Not to mention the fact that if it was uncovered that you were independently testing substances, and still got busted like this, that defense goes out the window too.

The supplement has to be bought by USADA, you can't have it on hand.
And then hope every one of the batch is tainted too.
