Anyone worried about increased risk of viral infection due to contact?

This came up and the gym the other day. I don't really care and I am at low risk but grappling has had it's share of bugs.......

I'll be the first one to say yes. I know this idea will get some hate in here too.

I'm not worried at the moment, but wait 2 to 3 months in the u.s. and let's see where this thing is at

A lot of gym owners are going to lose a lot of money. Quite a few will probably go out of business and some will become breeding pits of Corona, similar to the way they breed ringworm and staph.

I'm worried, but not so much for myself. I'm healthy, but I have family members who are not. Since this disease is infectious prior to showing symptoms, a person can spread it to others before they show any signs of the sickness. I'd hate to be the cause of one of my family members dying because I was too selfish to take measures to protect myself from getting it.

I was thinking the same thing

idc i men i wont go out of y way t grapple with someone whos sick but im not freaking out not gonna go train affraid of some new hyped virus

I work as a firefighter/paramedic. We have a close relation with our local hospital, which is one of the top teaching hospitals in the US. We are all laughing at how ridiculously overblown this has gotten.

Unless you had a weakened immune system or are concerned about an elderly family member don’t be worried. There’s an estimate that the actual number of those infected by the virus is much higher, about 3-4x that what is being reported but they don’t realize its different than any other sickness because the symptoms are so mild in the common heathy adult.

As a side note why the fuck are people hoarding toilet paper for this? Were people not wiping their asses before this outbreak? Do they believe clean bums are the cure to Coronavirus?

The toilet paper is in case of quarantine in home which has happened various places in the world.

I'm really worried that my gym will close for 1-2 months. Quitting BJJ cold turkey has like a 20% death rate, the science is clear on this.

Lord this makes me feel better about Sherdog. It’s been tough over the last few days.

I am from one of the red zones in Italy.

If this thing get worse in your country, you can only do one thing, stay home.

This. I've had Chickenpox as an adult, and I've had the Flu. I doubt the Jackie Chan Flu is going to hit me any harder than the white man's version. I'm much more worried about passing it on to elderly members of my family.

In Italy the government tried to take a light approach in the early stages, with sanitary suggestions and bland restrictions to the population. Result, after two weeks: now all Italy is more or less on lockdown.

It's not much the death rate of the sickness per se, but the fact that a not insignificant portion of the hospitalized people (more than the 10% or something) needs intensive care due to the pneumonia that the corona might give you, and while it still regards elders for the majority, middle aged or even younger persons can still need to be put in it to survive. To keep it short, If it keep going as it kept in the past weeks it has the potential to collapse our health system because we don't have THAT many intensive care spots and we might be forced to simply let people die.

Don't know what to add, as Bobblun said above, if things got worse where you are just stay home, if you have elders around you take particular care. I've put aside the thought of training jiu jitsu for now (and never mind that my football team was seriously fighting for the title after the last time was 20 years ago, only for this to happen.. lol) and I'm just thinking to get by this situation.

It surely can be beaten, it isn't the plague or something but it also needs to be taken seriously.

Keep safe and I pray this does not impact your family too much.

Not worried for myself but am concerned for extended family. Certainly not going to stop training, but will be scrubbing those mats extra good, then scrubbing myself after, not touching face, etc. You better believe if someone seems sick, I am not rolling with them or near them. Even if I am healthy, I could potentially pass something to family who are more at risk than I am. I have my retired in laws and my young children all under one roof for the next few months. My FIL tends to get a cold every winter that turns into bronchitis or lingers for weeks. So logically he is concerned about getting sick and coming in contact with COVID 19 while being immune compromised. We had had a couple confirmed cases next county over here last week (in the Southeast, not even remotely close to WA where first cases were confirmed). My FIL will probably limit his going out in public quite a bit. He will be around my young kids, who are in daycare daily and around other kids, and who bring home every cold / flu / strep that goes around.

You can be asymptomatic, still have it and pass it around all the same. Since you live in close contact with elders and cases are growing next where you are, you should seriously think it twice to keep rolling around in this moment.

The biggest problem I have here is the logic. The line of thinking is flawed. The problem with wrestling rooms, BJJ gyms, MMA gyms, et all - is bacterial and fungal infections, not viral.

Yes obviously if someone has Coronavirus or the common cold (Rhinovirus) or the normal flu, there are going to be high transmission rates if you are rolling with them or they are in the same class as you to infect others. Obviously. But the point I was trying to drive in the other thread is this that this is airborne. And you're more likely to encounter someone with this in a crowd of people...in a super market, train, plane, bar/club, hospital, work-place, school, etc.

Rolling is going to bring you into super close contact, again obviously, but how many people are you rolling with? How many people are even in a class? How many people have used the mats prior to cleaning in a 24 hour period (the life span of a flu virus on a hard surface)?

I mean if you (in general) are that worried then just quarratine youself I guess. If you aren't going to go to BJJ or wrestling or whatever, might as well just lock yourself in a room at that point.

everyone is going to lose money if it ends up being a major outbreak (still a lot but considering how many people die of other causes everyday it is low).

I'm just going to avoid it. I took a couple of weeks off as I was having some mental health issues (tired, stress form work, anniversary of my cousin's death coming up, etc.) I'm just going to avoid going for a few weeks to see how it plays out.
