I will be on October 28th unless the surgeon who's doing the work has a cancellation.

This whole mess started back in 2004 when I hurt my hip playing goalie in a men's league hockey game. I thought I could play through it, and I did, for eight more years. Two summers ago the pain became too great, so I retired. Life was good, but I had a ton trouble walking, the pain was and is pretty constant, but I had no idea how bad things really were.

Thankfully, a few months back I finally got medical insurance again, and I decided to bite the bullet and get an x-ray done. To my surprise-I thought it was a muscle issue-my femur was rubbing on the socket of my pelvis and all of the cartilage there was gone. Essentially, I am a 35 year old man with the hip of an 85 year old. Even better, the bone spurs were some of the worst the x-ray tech had ever seen. Damn.

I really don't have too much to bitch about, but I'm scared shitless as this is my first surgery, and the idea of having my femur cut into is pretty terrifying. I'm blessed that it won't cut into my work very much, and super lucky to be insured, but the doc said my days of hockey playing are over-as are my days of doing anything much more exciting than running or swimming. Still, could be worse.

TLDR
I'm 35 and getting my hip replaced.

I haven't but I know a coworker that has, surprisingly he was back at work only a month or two after

my daughter had to have a hip reconstruction when she was 3 due to hip dyplasia, she was in hospital for a few days and in a full body cast for 3 months. She took it like a champ.

It is gonna fucking hurt TS.

Same here. I know a guy that was back at work in a month. He was probably 50 and overweight.

Aric, sorry to hear it. You'll have some pain, so be liberal with the pain meds (within reason). Anticipate the hospital meds wearing off (usually the night of the surgery if the surgery is in the morning) and be proactive with your pain meds (don't wait for pain).

I'd think being 35 would help speed the recovery time in comparison to nearly all hip replacements. How long do they expect the replacement to last?

Man, good for her, I'm glad she recovered so well.

I think you may be right.

Cool, I love to hear the success stories.

Replacement expectations last about thirty years, but as my surgeon said, "You can either suffer like this for thirty more years and then do it, or get it fixed and at the very worst, assume the technology won't get better and you need to go through it again."

Dude, you get opiates. Be happy. You will be happy.

I am terrified of opiate addiction after watching a couple of buddies go through that shit. I'll take what I need to, but pain will be easier for me to deal with than a pill problem.

VKevin and Wrath...

You getting a reconstruction or a replacement? Isn't there a difference?

My friend Doug said he wished he'd never got the operation. He got a replacement.

I'm getting a titanium replacement. Sucks that he feels that way.

Don't forget Foster. He is 107 years old!

Very good man. Ive seen what its done to good people. Fuck pills

Good luck ts...I've had hip pain for a while so that's scary shit

I was surprised that my Grandma was awake throughout her op, I don't like the idea of general anaesthetics but god damn that would be nasty.

Only do it if you can't live with the pain anymore.

Most replacements are successful but there are a handful who should have held off for as long as possible. It will effect you quality of life.
