Hey everyone,

I was looking for some advice on weight pulling sports for dogs. My wife and I are looking a getting an 8 week old female Malamute/Siberian Husky cross, expected to come in around 60-80lbs full grown. I have been looking at activities we could do to keep the exercise fun as they are high energy breeds. Obviously being sled/work dogs pulling shouldn't be hard to get the dog onto.

Ideally I think carting would be the best and would like some advice on that, I have a young nephew and I like the idea of being able to have the dog pull him in a wagon while we go for walks. As the dog gets bigger I think that getting into heavier weight pulling would be something I'd like to get into if she takes to it,

I know since they are a large breed that heavyweights off limits until they are fully mature.

Thanks in advance.

TL:DR
-Getting Malamute/Husky Cross - 60-80lbs full grown
- Need advice on carting & weight pulling
- Potential equipment needs
- Potential DIY ideas for getting into carting & weight pulling

i have a pug that hates going on walks. so much so that on the way back he basically pulls me into the house. when i take the trash cans out he i take him with me and he pulls me along with the trash cans makes it much easier and quick. i never tried to make him do either he just started doing it

I had seen people starting out with old tires and filled milk jugs. Well built dog you have, how old when you started on the tires?

They like to run when they pull.

Badass, dude.

I have a Siberian Husky, myself.

Awesome dogs.

When I was real young we had a husky, then a husky collie cross, very good dogs. I have two ankle biters that are 10 and ones got health issues building up, so Id like to add the pup before we lose our other one.

Edit: forgot to ask, how old is you husky? do you have any sports you do together?

He's about ten and half months old. Just got him fixed.

We don't do any sports together, just jog.

Not my dog. I just found the picture on the internet. If I had a pulling dog, I'd start off cheapest effective way and then move on from there.

How big has he gotten? If you don't mind, what type of environment do you live in? (apartment, rural) and how often you go jogging?

I live out in the sticks so access to hiking trails or open space wont be an issue for us.

He's close to sixty pounds now.
I'm trying to post a pic of him, but not sure how with the new format.

We jog on occasion, not really that often anymore. Guess I got lazy.

I live in a house with a backyard. Not a big backyard, however. He mostly goes out to do his business.

If you have the space, your dog will love it.

Good luck!

They dont really need to pull weights, just good long walks (min 3-5 miles per day).
Get a choke chain, not a harness or they'll pull your arms off.
For the first year they'll tend to dig, chew or eat anything thats around (shoes, jeans, furniture, saddle, lights and crash mushrooms off my bike etc)
They shed a lot during the summer.

They love tuna, eggs and pigs feet.
They get very big, very quick and can get very aggresive if not controled properly.

I can safely say I have never seen a thread on this on any chat forum before.

If you're building a cart for your nephew that mofo better be a Roman style chariot.

edit: Google image search never disappoints

Our husky bit my sister in the face leaving a big scar. My step dad killed it with his bare hands 3 minutes later. Pretty traumatizing thing to see at 10 lol.

Thanks for the info, I was looking for some Info on how quick they grew so I appreciate the post. The previous dogs we had, they were both 1&2 when we got them so the puppy stage info is helpful, do you feed your dog a raw food diet?

My wife was bitten by a shi-poo, dogs bite from time to time, I was bit by a jack Russell. Things happen, I think bites often have to do with training the dog as well as training children to interact with animals, thanks for the post

Ya. I think she was teasing the dog with food. She was only like 7yrs old though. I guess my step dad seeing his daughter bleeding from the face like that caused him to kill the dog.
