I've been hitting it all the time now.

I have side control, and they may get and uderhok as sometimes this happens. We all know this. Then, sometimes they buck, and when they do, many of us use that bumping energy to mount them. Whenever this happens, I naturally just have my arm squeezed tight to my side and once I mount, I just fall to my hip and throw th leg over the face. Then I turn my knee and gt the shoulder lock.

Anyone else find this movement very natural?I never did it till a few weeks ago and now I get it all the time.

Yeah! I only hit it from the mount though. I find it's easier than hitting an armbar from there.

Hitting it from Mount has been my top submission for a while. I didn't even know it was called the monoplata until someone showed me a Marcelo DVD.

I still call it the Marceloplata. I get it off a certain half guard passing sequence Marcelo taught at a seminar.

I like to get it off quarter guard. If they try to buck and reverse me, you can go to the Carni.

Honestly I didn't know what it was, but after looking at the DVDs, it does resemble Mr. Bravo's Carni alot when done from full guard. You just don't let them roll... I wonder which is higher percentage. I'd think for most people it'd be the Carni since it's a little less complicated, but advanced grappler's would most likely lean towards Marcelo's variation.

I don't think it's like the carni. Personally, I'm sick of all this 10th planet stuff, some of it's neat, but alot of n00bz try to do the rubber guard when they should be working the basics. Besides, Marcelo would tool Bravo. B)

I saw a video of Marcelo teaching this from half-guard and it was SICK!

+1 with the video, I need all the mount help I can get!

This is all I could find that wasn't submissions101. To truly get a good appreciation for this technique, you've got to see Marcelo do it. It's on his Series 4 DVD set.

I've watched Marcelo's instructional on the Monoplata. Haven't gotten to experience it first-hand as the victim, user, or observer.

Would you guys say it's a staple technique or more of a technique that's good to have in the toolbox, but not one of the most important ones?

And the other questions I have are... did Marcelo invent or popularize it? Is it new? I haven't seen ANYONE use it in competition.

I actually just watched Demain Maia teach it on his half guard attacks dvd from set 2- gonna try it later today at class. I have hit it after reading about it on Aesopian's site but havn't hit it recently- I usually end up hitting the armbar.
