I work in a very small building. For the last year and a half, management has insisted we lock our only entrance/exit from the inside, as one of the managers had a stalker after them back then. I looked online and it's a fire hazard to have the only entrance/exit locked, especially if it requires a key to open either way. So, I never lock the door behind me.

Well today I got chewed out by management for not locking the door. It's fucking stupid that because she got herself stalked almost 2 years ago, we all have to pay for it and people here are getting tired of it. I've got half a mind to write OSHA and report management. Has anyone else done this and does it work?

It's a fire code violation in most places in the US.

It's perfectly legal to have ALL doors locked as long as they don't keep people from exiting. Nearly every business built in the last 20 years has doors that auto lock. If a key or turning a knob is required, that's a problem and they need to upgrade to a new door.

Right - that's what I read - if they have those crash bar things or whatever that you push in it's ok. This door you have to get the key to open it otherwise it keeps people from exiting. This is an old ass building

Sounds like you work in a small place that probably doesnt have a proper HR dept. While it may be worth it to look into, is it worth the hassle of having problems with people you have to see everyday? I say this with experience as I worked for a startup that was paying salary and not compensating for overtime. I looked up some laws and challenged their HQ in chicago and it wasnt pretty. I was running one of the biggest accounts at the time and I either wouldnt get help or was frowned at constantly. Also was constantly threatened to be laid off (hello unemployment) but they never wanted to go that far out of fear of a lawsuit.

A lot of times its just not worth it unless you dont plan on being there long and have a backup plan.

Perhaps an anonymous email to the local Fire Inspector would initiate in inspection.

They should have an anonymous tip line.

One call does it all.

I looked and I can submit a complaint anonymously.

my job actually got sued and we all got class actio n lawsuit checks because they violated a lot of laws unbeknownst to us.

I actually didn't find out nothing was shady until they bounced an entire check and a lot of us stopped working because we werent paid.

someone contacted the labor commissioner and we ended up getting our pay check 3 weeks later and I got another job.

Pics of your lady boss so can properly assess the danger invlved?

Osha guy came to my work because I fired a fat slob that kept complaining about his ankle and he reported several violations. The Osha dude(Asian guy) showed up and requested an escort. Made me get a shield for my grinder and a rain jacket for the Mexican guy who works outside(no one really knows what he does). Osha dude was immune to the runaround and was possibly the least charming man I have ever met. Go fuck yourself if you wanna rat on your cohorts.

Not OSHA, but I've reported the company I worked for to the EPA.

Get it on video, audio or in writing. In some cases they can have the lock on the door but have to have a sign.
