must be intoxicated on nostalgia.

I am listening to Big John McCarthy on the Joe Rogan, and he is talking about the history of MMA/UFC, and it was a bunch of aggressive soccer dads back in the day.

It is not even the same sport we have today. Anybody before 2009 at best is a pioneer. That is it.

The new breed bullshit, is the biggest bullshit of all time.

Never have I seen a fight and thought , "WOW that guy is evolved"......Just stfu kid, Conor would've gotten destroyed back in the day.

By whom?

Lmao, what a casual. how dare you disgrace Fedor and GSP like that.

BJ would of wrecked Connor. Gomi with shit cardio and haduken power punch might KO him too. Matt Hughes, Serra, sherk, would have all pushed his shit in. He may have even ate a running knee from prime KID. Too many OG fighters would pushed his shit in in non protected era.

I don’t know about putting that time frame on it, you would have to go back further than that, but for sure I agree with premise. It’s not the technique necessarily that has evolved, but the science, training, strategy, time devoted, etc that has evolved.

Put down the nostalgia Kool-Aid.

GSP's dominance came after 2009. So, you must be a casual also.

Gomi was too wild. Conor would cake walk through Kid too. He only moved forward.
Matt Hughes how ever. He would have the best chance.
Sherk was juiced to the tits and Serra was too slow.

Conor would have outboxed BJ Penn and KOd him on the feet. On the ground, Penn's "submissions" don't work in 2018. Yeah I know Nate got a RNC. That was after cardio, punishment, on the feet, an it was a choke, and it was 1 in a million. Joint locks, mount, etc, dont matter in 2018. Conor KOs BJ all day.

So you're telling me prime Frank Shamrock, Randy Couture, Mark Coleman, Fedor, Igor, etc wouldn't be elite today?

Get out.

Another very important important thing is that the talent pool has grown. Although it is not yet at its peak, it is still better than the talent pool from the early no holds barred fighting days.

At least today, it is C-level athletes competing with other C-level athletes. Back in the day it was C-level and D-level athletes competing with predominantly aggressive soccer dads, stunt actors, WWE entertainers and bullshido masters.

it started in the mid-2000s though and a lot of his signature wins were before or in 2009
there is no cutoff like that and several 2000s guys are clearly in contention for goat

Frank Shamrock was pretty good in the '90's
I am not disputing that. I am questioning the talent of the competition. The really good MMA athletes of back-in-days are victims of the time their were born. Unfortunately, all they can be is pioneers.

Maybe Wilt Chamberlain would have dominated the NBA if he played today, but he was born at the time he was born and played at the time he played, so we can only judge him in that context.

The truth is the MMA talent pool is better today than it has ever been. There are less soccer dads, Japanese WWE actors and Bullshido masters competing at the highest level today. It will keep getting better.

In my opinion, the GOAT of MMA has yet to show up.
