ams...I didnt go for the blue belt open. The kid won the tournament at light feather and open. Being a little guy myself I find that quite amazing. How did he win? Did he barely get the win or was he dominating heavy weights?

Yeah I wish there were some videos of that kid in the absolute I wish I could see those matches. I was in his division at pans and he looked very dominant in all of his matches in our division. Wish he would get his purple already, he won Brazilian nationals as a blue in 09 so he's kind of overdue...

The kid is definitely overdue...but i heard he's only 17! So that kind of explains him still being blue. He must've just gotten his blue but he's probably been training for a good while.

Just did a quick search yeah he won the brazilian nationals at blue belt in 09 and he's currently 19. I'd love to see the matches.

he beat a friend of mine who was in the 167 weight class and he put him in 50/50, scored some advantages and held on till the clock ran out

actually I am pretty sure he is 19 and as I said he was a blue 2 years ago when he won the brasileiros, one of the most prestigious competitions in the world... sandbagging at its worst.

Your teammate Pedro Torres won the Pans last year at purple and this year he competed again at purple. Would you consider that sandbagging too?

He won it his first year as a purple, he didn't place at worlds that year and lost a tough match in the semi finals to gianni grippo this year so no he isn't really sandbagging, although he is without a doubt an excellent purple belt. To put things into perspective though Pedro won worlds as a blue in 09 and now he's a high level purple, this kid won the brazilian nationals as a blue in 09( which at the blue belt level at least is probably just as prestigious as worlds) and is STILL a blue belt. He was ridiculously dominant in light feather, finishing most of his opponents in a minute or so.

As a superfeather blue myself, I sure as heck hope that promotion comes to him before Mundials. :)

He turned 20 on the weekend of the pan ams. I lost to him in the final of the our weightclass 4-0 or 6-0 not sure

I wonder if the kid can make roosterweight, he does look small enough for it. but I don't see why he would need to make the lower weight class since he is doing well already

Personally, I don

He probably won't be promoted until after the Worlds...

But graciemag did an article on him.

Kid is a freaking badass.I asked him in broken portuguese and I'm pretty sure he said he started training bjj at 13.

I thought they were instituting some sort of limit in the IBJJF just to stop exactly this sort of thing? Something like if you win gold at a major IBJJF event you couldn't compete in that division the next year? If he's 20 he's already eligible for his black belt so it's not an issue of age? I wonder what the hold up is?

People are all over the map with stuff. On the one hand you have teams that obviously hold people back in order to win team trophies, and I don't see anything particularly wrong with that, especially when you have forums light up with "OMG WHAT HAPPENED TO TEAM XYZ?!" There's a lot of pressure to show that your school/team is the best, and the best way to do that is to ensure you field the top guys at a given class.

Regarding the other issue about officially trying to avoid sandbagging -- the IBJJF rules actually work against this! I was talking to a famous competitor who was promoted to purple right before competing and took gold. She was then promoted to brown after that, but IBJJF rules prevent her from competing at brown because her promotion isn't recognized as 'valid' because she hadn't had her purple for 1.5 years yet.

International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation

You have to spend 1.5 years at purple before getting your brown under IBJJF rules. So if you're promoted right before a competition and win gold, you're going to have to compete the next year at purple or not compete at all if you were promoted (since the IBJJF won't recognize your promotion).

then again, maybe his instructor thinks there's a part of his game that is lacking to be promoted to purple. what will people say when he is promoted to purple and then loses badly in his first couple tournaments? that he is all hype? promotion is his coach's job, not for anyone else to influence. But if he did get promoted, I wouldn't question it
