I've never really explored the genre outside of some Jazz Fusion like Al Di Meola and Greg Howe. I've heard what I'd consider to be Jazz influenced solos here and there in songs by bands that aren't predominantly Jazz. It's made me interested in exploring the genre.

    Anybody have any recommendations?

Anyone interested in Jazz is likely best served starting with 40s era standards as they're by far the most accessible. Ironically, fusion is probably the least accessible (not including ''free jazz'') and you said you like it already. So since you're kinda ''broken in'' pretty much anything is game.

There's Jazz threads around in P+M so check out those, but personally I've been digging Wayne Shorter and Pat Metheny lately.

You can't go wrong with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie.

Weather Report is a great Jazz band, especially the Heavy Weather Album Jaco really made that album go over the top.

    You need Mingus.

Pure and simple. Start with Mingus Ah Um. It's a post-bop record that has the controled chaos you'll often feel in fusion. It being a Mingus record means that it also has loads of power and that the people involved are at the top of their games, Mingus does that to bandmates.

If it feels too prog for you, then go down to Birth of the Cool or Kind of Blue. These are good records to have as landmarks to figure out what you like.

I like jazz, but Kind of Blue is the only album I consistently listen to.

I've checked it out. I've been listening too "Ready For The Blues - 22 Vintage Blues Tracks (One Hour Of Blues)" (I have a bit of interest in Blues too) although I really can't say I'm enjoying it.
