I'm hopefully going back to BJJ in 2 or 3 weeks.. Had my op around 2 weeks ago, fixing a deviated septum (septuplasty). Anyone have expierence going back to grappling after a nose op? I'm scared I'll fuck it up.

Stories please :p

Just don't tell any of your training partners. The roll before which you say "just watch out for my nose", is the roll in which you'll catch 3 accidental elbows haha

Feel like you've healed enough to train? Wait two more weeks. Because you WILL get whacked.

I had a very bad break and had to get a septuplasty as well. Rebroke the nose applied stints the whole works. It was painful as hell I feel your pain. I was out for 6 weeks. Anything touching my nose was excruciating for about 4 weeks. After 4 weeks I flow rolled with upper belts and was very very careful. After a couple months I was back to hard training but was still concious about the nose. Take your time to heal you don't want to get that surgery again.
Side note, my Dr. Told me he had pro hockey players come and get the same surgery 3 times a year. Fuck those guys are tough haha

Got septoplasty done twice, not so fun. Hazard of combat sports (mine was jacked up by boxing and BJJ). I am not sure I didn't have to go back because of grappling ... I got it cracked a couple times in judo after the first time. Fortunately my doctors had free revision policy (as my primary doctor put it, free rhinoplasty, who wouldn't be happy?).

Look, it's not great, that's the reality. If you got it smashed before in training, there's little objective reason to expect it won't get smashed again.

You really learn how to block crossfaces super well as well as turn your head away from pressure more.

You will have to protect it but eventually you forget about it little by little.

I had surgery for a deviated septum, and based upon doctors advice, did not return to the mats for 5 months. At that time, I still had to watch my nose in certain positions and would just tap if it was getting smooshed. It seems to be good now, but I am a casual practitioner with a lot of experience. Therefore, if I feel too much pressure on the nose, I will give up position or tap, so I do not return to the sinus/nose problems of the past.

Meh. You are probably correct saying it will get smashed again, but I really hope I can somehow avoid going through this shitmare again. Good news about you getting a free revision policy though :p

I'm allowed to get a 2nd op myself, I have a follow up in 3 months so I guess if I've done any damage the doc can tell me then. I'm just going to be careful as I can.

And wow, 5 months is a long time. I was actually told I should never go back if I want my nose to stay intact lol, but if I am going to that I should take at least 1 month to 6 weeks but to be honest, a month is probably too soon? I'm not gonna bother with sparring or anything for a few weeks after I'm back, just gonna do drills etc.
