Since I've been off training for a little bit from a messed knee, I've been doing stuff at home for my grip strength. Been doing pull ups of all kinds, hanging an old jj belt across the bar and doing pull ups on that guy, rope climbs etc.

got me thinking about rock climbers grip strength and upper body endurance, etc. Anyone here rock climb either before grappling or to supplement grip?

No, but it seems like it would be cool and great for strength. You never see out of shape climbers.

Belt pull ups are teh awesome.

Yep, I was actually on a competitive rock climbing team for a while and your grip strength and forearm strength get to be pretty ridiculous after so much climbing.

I don't climb, but a friend of mine (a small little dude) use to climb a lot and he was ripped! Strong as an ox too

I used to climb quite a bit, mainly ice climbing though. One of my main training partners climbs at a competitve level. Climbers also develop amazing core strength and balance. Another adventure sport that works on grip, core and balance is kayaking, you also end up being able to stay calm when you can't breathe.

Last week I did it and my forearms hurt for like 3 days or something ridiculous. One of my brown belt instructors was a very good rockclimber and his grip and core strength is amazing.

Needless to say, I am going to try to rock climb once a week to get my grip strength up.

In college a few of my wrestling teammates climbed pretty regularly. I think its a good idea. Really helps with grip strength and endurance. The gym I work at is considering putting in a climbing wall so I'll definitely get back into it if they do.

This is an actual great idea, and I thought about it before when I first found out my college had a wall and I was in BJJ, but with school work and training I never found the time to get to the wall, but thanks for reminding me I might just spend some time this summer on that wall and see how much it helps.

i've recently done some rockclimbing, the shit's fin as hell, when you get better and start bouldering you can do some insane shit

I trained with a rock climbing grappler once.

He had incredible grip strength as everyone noted, and was just in great shape overall for grappling. He attributed a lot of it to the climbing.

I just rock climbed today, it will certainly help your grip and overall body conditioning.

If youre not using mostly your legs in rock climbing then youre using unecessary energy.

i rock climb... its actually how i ended up doing bjj... our bouldering gym in town closed and i needed something to do and voila bjj ... but i miss rock climbing and its supremely good for core strenght and grip strength imo

I rock climbed before I did jujitsu.

A beginner will use way too much strength trying to make everything into a pullup and their hands and forearms will be the first to start burning uncontrolably, followed quickly by your calves.

As you get better, you use your arms for balance to move your feet into a position where your legs can do most of the lifting work as Gregoric said.

Are we talking indoor/gym rock climbing or outdoor. I want to rock climb but im not sure i wanna pay everytime i go to the rockclimbing gym (poor teenager). Plus I think indoor rock climbing would kind of be like runnning on a tredmill. Houston sucks when i used to live in arizona i could go ride my bike on hills or climb a steep hill but no houston is flat.

indoor bouldering is a better workout than outdoor climbing in most cases.... outdoor climbing makes for a more pleasant day and what not but you have to have more gear to climb outdoors so its more expensive in general, not to mention depending on where you live outdoor climbing can be really limited w/out a significant drive (gas prices defeat savings on cost to climb indoors) also a good bouldering gym will update the bouldering problems on a regular basis keeping it interesting.... i definately enjoy both but for purpose of strictly working out id say indoor bouldering is your best bet
