Any other clean freaks that get staph?

Brother...

I'm tellin you...

I was shoving yogurt down my throat all day for 2 weeks. I was taking Bactrim, a sulfur based antibiotix which I have taken with no problems before. Only this time, I was supposed to take 2x a day instead of 1. That 2 made the difference. My gut hurt for 2 weeks.

finally someone else has heard of bactrim! I was told when I was young (like 4/5) that I was allergic to this, and every doc i've mentioned it to has never heard of it and it's not in any of their big glossary/med books. (i'm in england so maybe it's an american med that was discontinued over here).
not really contributing much to the thread, just glad i'm not crazy.

No one at my gym has gotten staph since I've been around. Two cases of Impitego(sp?) in two years, maybe 5 or 6 guys with ringworm.

I don't understand how it happens so often elsewhere.

One thing that really sucks about staph is that if you get it once, you're way more prone to getting it again. Thank God I've never gotten it.

Me, I got in on the back of my head 2 years ago. I shower, and worry about that crap all the time. I paranoid about getting staph, ringworm and warts.

Sometimes it can be out of your control if your gym has dirty mats or your training partners aren't cleaning themselves.

I try to be as clean as I can be when it comes to training. I wash my gear with vinegar and shower with defense soap within 15 minutes of getting off the mat. However, I try to not be so obsessive outside of Jiu-Jitsu. Don't load yourself up with hand sanitizer and don't shower 3 times a day. If your food drops on the floor, pick it up and eat it! Getting lots of protein and vitamins is also important for your immune system. You want your body to be strong against infection. The defense soap should just be helping your body out, don't rely on it to do 100% of the work.

This shit scares me, cos im the type of person who would dimiss that spot that wouldnt pop as just being difficult, not thinkin it could be staph.
Ive had alot of cuts in BJJ from people who cant be bothered cutting their nails and one of the gyms i train at seem very dirty, with 1 person having staph, It amazes me how ppl can cum to the gym while being dirty, i wash before erry class, i wish others could do the same - tho 1 thing i would love to see brought in is mandatory hand n foot washes before class.

Tho for my revenge imma have sex b4 a class n not wash - time for triangles

im definately on the cleaner side of things. i shower before and after every training session, but not at the gym. i wash my gi after every use and often go through two gis in a 3 hour training session. i got staph twice in my ear and i now believe that its from training and going home to shower while listening to my ipod. i dont put my ear phones in after training and so far so good.

how long do you guys wait after finishing your antibiotics before going back to the mats?

It might be discontinued over there because I've had a few different doctors all tell me they like to prescribe it, and I know some friends that have had to take it. Interesting... Is there anything else sulfur-based that you get in the UK?

impetigo is caused by staph aureus or streptococcus bacteria.

i think people misunderstand that staph infections vary in degrees of severity. impetigo is just a superficial infection.

Impetigo is simple to get rid of. Look for polysphorin in your drug store right next to the neosphorin.

Defense Soap

Do you wash the bag you carry your stuff in? You wash your sheets regularly? Some gyms just have more trouble, and some peoples immune systems are different i guess.

Yeah man I wash my bag a lot and spray it with the anti-bacterial febrees spray on nights that it's not washed. I wash my sheets at least 2 a week, I think I need to see a specialist about my immune system cause something has got to be wrong, staph 3 times in one year while taking every precaution? Anyone know if there is advantages to using defense soap over just some normal anti-bacterial soap you can find in a grocery store?

I have staph on my stomach now. I am on Bactrim also, as far as making your stomach hurt, I always eat before I take each dose and chug 20oz of water with it. I havn't had any problems with it hurting my stomach, but I didn't eat with it once and got real hot and nauseated.

And I would suggest getting a clearance from the doctor before you go back on the mat, you really dont want to pass that stuff around anymore than it already is.

Another thing, the doctor never came out and told me what it was...I came in and said I think I have staph and she checked it out, cleaned it, told me waht to do and prescribed me the meds. I asked if it was actually staph and she said "more than likely." I thought that was kinda awkward. It just says boil on my paperwork. She also said I can wash it with any kind of antibacterial soap, like Dial and not to dry it with my towel, but use a napkin for that area.

Also wash everything with bleach or some kind of bacterial killing agent.

Useful info. I'm really not sure about any of this stuff.

I can vouch for "being too clean." I used to take a shower right before class and would get staph or ringworm often. Once I stopped doing that, I haven't had any problems. Just be sure to shower once a day (always right after class). You need to have plenty of good bacteria on your body to help fight the bad. Using soap right before training kills good bacteria as well as the bad, which leaves you susceptible to problems.

This is also why I don't use antibacterial soap. Avoid it if you can. I heard the reason for the MRSA epidemic is because of the increased use of antibacterial soaps. Regular soap is perfect.

maybe you should try 4 or 5 showers a day.........

ETA: i only shower on days i train. no problems here.

Keep your head up man, it will resolve over time.

Never shower at least a few hours before practice, all you're doing
is cleaning natural oils/salts on your skin that protects you from infections.
I might shower once in the mornings and ASAP right after training (using hand soap on my hands, knees, and elbow when i shower). Also look out for cuts and put
neosporin on them. Almost 2 years of training and i've only had molescum.

it also goes by the name Septra and Septrin so maybe that's what they call it over there, or because its been out for a while many docs don't even know the brand name anymore and just refer to it as the generic sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, or SMZ-TMP. just a thought.

You guys who are putting neosporin and polysporin on every tiny cut are contributing to the problem. They're antibiotics. Bacteria can and will develop resistances to them. Use chlorhexidine or benzalkonium chloride. Save the antibiotics for when they've been prescribed to you.
