I have been training grappling for a few months and Im pretty happy with my progress... I understand the plateaus and am really enjoying the learning curve now, having got past one or two brick walls.

One thing is still getting the better of me, and that thing is just about every leg attack.

I train at 2 places and the guys I train with rarely use any form of leg attack.
So when someone attempts one on me too often for my liking I end up tapping rather than defending, i have had a medium knee injury and this was the initial reason, i would just give it up and start over, being a beginner and not wanting another knee injury.

But lately i have been trying to defend them yet still I have trouble.

I know its a pretty broad subject but if anyone has any lesser known defenses to stuff like achilles lock/straight ankle lock then I would find it very useful.

Thanks.

First, don't panic. The second you start to panic you've pretty much relegated yourself to tapping. As for defenses, its pretty f_ckin hard to describe exactly what to do on here...look up some vids on youtube

EDIT: I'm coming to the UK in September for 4 months, london specifically, where do you train?

yeah like fallen said look up vids, the best defense though is try to not let them get your leg :-), try and make sure your legs are always not in their grasp if they are in control. Its hard to explain it right on the internet and by typing, better to be taught in person

youtube leg defense. pick what you likee they have plenty of leg defense clips single and double leg

umm, the legs are like the biggest parts of your body. it is REALLY hard to "not let them get your legs". In ankle lock scenrious, i was taught to post my other foot on the guys butt and spin out/push out/get out. Generally, dont put your foot across his body. With kneebars I grab his top foot(one closest to me) and pull it open and work on getting my own leg out from there.

With the achilles lock there are a ton of counter leg locks but I wouldn't reccomend using them in training because they attack the knee mostly.

Keep your foot straight as long as you can and try to sit up into them.

In some scenerios that wont work at all and you should put pressure on your heel and then bail.

As most everyone else said its a hard thing to describe.

Cheers guys, thats actually pretty helpful.

When I posted the thread I thought it might be a bit of a stupid question; 'how do you defend leg attacks...' i mean talk aboutm minefield... but it was realy buggin me so i just had to ask.

This mornin i rolled with 4 of my training partners and I successfully defended 2 out of 4 of the leg attacks, tapping to the other two, but they all outweigh me so I think thats not bad. Againsyt guys my weight I honestly think i would have defended all 4.

The one guy I just grasped the back of his head and braced my toes toward myself, I have never clinched the back of the head with as much determination!! And when he fell back I just carried on with him, holding his neck in the thai clinch type position. Eventually I was able to plant my other foot and escape.

Two things i have noticed, one is that when I tap its not exactly out of respect, but knowing that the guy Im rolling with is more advanced than me and me not wanting to spaz out and injure him or me usually means i end up tapping rather than defending, and I have just got to kick that habit out of my game.

Also, and quite strangely, it is always my right leg/foot that gets attacked.

*Oh and it wasnt like some kind of leg attack workshop where I just asked each of them to attack me with leg attacks, lol.
It was just an honest, open spar, where two of the guys out of four each tried ankle locks/achilles locks twice each, it jus so happened that is what they went for rather than pass guard.
