UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, a mainstay at the Duke Roufus-led Roufusport team in Milwaukee, believes his new teammate might just have what it takes to have some success – once he finally gets rolling.

CM Punk was announced in December as the UFC’s latest signee – though he doesn’t have any professional MMA experience. Opinions have ranged from cautiously optimistic to essentially outrage over his shot at the world’s biggest promotion without having to prove himself elsewhere.

But Pettis said at Roufusport, he’ll be taking it slow, honing his all-around skills to make sure he’s ready – whenever that time may be.

“He hasn’t trained with the team yet,” Pettis told MMAjunkie. “He’s doing private lessons with Duke and my jiu-jitsu coach. We don’t want to scare him away. But I’m not discrediting him because he’s definitely a great athlete. It’s just when it comes to MMA you’ve got to put it all together. His striking is going to need some improvement. His jiu-jitsu is getting improvement. He’s going to get improvement everywhere with the team, but we just want to take it slow, and he agrees.”

Pettis, who in December defended his 155-pound title with a second-round submission of Gilbert Melendez, said CM Punk’s star power outside the MMA world, as one of the most successful superstars in WWE history, didn’t play a factor when he came to Milwaukee.

“That’s the cool thing about him,” Pettis said. “He said, ‘I’m not coming in with any ego. I want you to tell me when I’m ready. And when you guys think I’m ready, that’s when I’m ready.’ That shows me that he’s going to do great in the sport.

“Knowing the following he has, he’s very modest. He is a very cool guy. He’s down to earth, and he didn’t come in with an ego at all into the gym. I think we have a great relationship right away. He’s asking questions and advice on training. He wants to do it, so that’s great. The first step is wanting to do it, and now he’s putting it all together.”

What is your reaction? I think that Pettis is trying to be nice and he sees that CM Punk is willing to learn.

Well he can't come out and say the dude is going to get his ass kicked.

Well Pettis is probably trying to be as diplomatic as possible. When you become a champ in this org you kinda have to.

I hope he is working double time on taking people down because jiu-jitsu is very hard to implement this day and age because of so many good wrestlers not to mention so many are very good at defending.

lol the guy is literally learning how to fight to debut in the UFC. what a joke

He picked a good camp to train with. They are probably going to dunk his ass in the deep end of the pool. Let the beatings commence.

Sounds like he has a good attitude, but if a 36 year old will start training MMA and then wait until his team tells him he is ready to make his debut in the UFC, it kind of sounds like it's something that will not happen ever.

Still a joke to the hardcore fans

They signed a guy with no experience and that needs time to be ready,

If CM Punk does make his debut fight. He should fight a guy who is 0-0 in amatuer/pro, but with background in learning martial arts.

Everything they say is probably true, but it would make more sense if they were getting the guy ready for some fight at a backwoods Casino in northern Minnesota. This is for his first UFC fight in his late 30's with no competition background. Lol.

2 guys with 0-0. One of the biggest MMA fights in 2015.

I think Dana should make CM Punk compete on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, that way he gets to fight other up and comers and at the same time save that shit show from its abysmal ratings. CM needs another year or so until he's even at TUF level but I say he should have to prove himself first and shouldn't be fed to the lions just yet. Really, who do you book to fight him? Who could he actually beat at MW? Ed Herman? Andy Enz? Tom Watson? I really don't see this ending well for him. He would have been better off as a commentator.

I feel like Pettis is an all round nice guy and no hater, but also not a liar. To read between the lines a bit, he isn't training with the team, and his striking is shite. But other than that he's keen and has left his ego at the door, but notice that is phrased as "first step". Not progress, not development, but first step. Diplomatic, but hardly encouraging of his progress

Obnoxious misleading title by TS. Pettis says Punk has the right attitude to do great. He doesn't say he has the skills to do great. If we went by attitude, imagine the bronies they let into the UFC.

I wonder if a commission would sanction a fight with Minowaman

I like Cm, despite me having a disdain for pro wresslin.

That was the article's headline.
