Anyone ever trained with ankle weights while practicing kicking, knees and checking? I've thought about incorporating this into my training with some light ankle weights. Not planning on throwing hard kicks or knees of course, I would just be doing slow low intensity movements to help with endurance and maybe speed and power benefit as well.

As long as its slow and controlled movement's it should help like most resistant based exercises would...

Not sure of the effectiveness though vs lets say just running with ankle weights on

Using weight in combination with going 'slow motion' through the form of kicks is a good way to build the strength of stabilization and balance for better kick dexterity.

In trying to be more sports specific I'm looking to get the same kind of benefit that shadowboxing with light dumbbells gets you. I'm honestly surprised not many kickfighters gave tried training with ankle weights. Most boxers do some low intensity shadowboxing with light dumbbells nowadays.

Does wonders for teeps, sidekicks, and shin checks.

But not that good for roundhouse training IMO

I imagine the more a kick relies on momentum the less useful the ankle weight will be

If you want to fuck up your knees, go for it.

Yeah this sounds absolutely stupid unless you’re using a nominal weight or are very mechanically selective with the type of kick your training.

Kicks should originate from your core.

Good technique will have KO power from momentum in your lower shin and foot.

B fucking careful with those knees!!!

At an advanced level of training once mastered basic kicking "Ankle Weights" are great for learning how to jump into flying side kicks and other types of kicks also.

Some use elastic bands for conditioning as option.

There are a few methods, but always start with your own body weight first slowly and always stretch prior to kicking exercises.

Just be careful not to over do it by using excessive force/speed as its not about power and speed but strength development.

But yes, great tool for (tendon / muscle strength) kicking, just learn how to use them properly with sound advice as you train!

Incorrect use will cause injury so use it as a build up tool slowly DONT over do it or overly train. Just train once or twice a week is fine.

Then massage joints and rub some Dit Da Jow - https://wellnessmama.com/wp-content...-remedy-for-pain-relief-and-rapid-healing.jpg

Rub into your feet, ankles, knees and hip joints might as well rub some into your hands elbows and shoulders follow the instructions.

So always..... Start with your own body weight, then small incremental adjustable weights.

I really don't see how it's going to cause damage to your knees. I think some people are worried about the stress applied from the side of your knees but with light weights I don't see how this would be a problem. Otherwise this exercise here must be suicide for your knees yet I don't see anyone in the fitness community claiming this to be true

How do you think throwing slow controlled kicks with light ankle weights is gonna mess up my knees?

Not defending his point, but I have heard that training with weights (whether it be shadowboxing while holding light dumb bells or practicing kicks with ankle weights) puts more stress on your joints and can lead to problems later down the road. I don't know enough about the topic to tell you whether or not you should do it, though

Shadowboxing with weights too heavy or going fast with light dumbells can cause problems but not as I mentioned

I use them for foot work and stance work but not for kicking. I don't really know if they improve my conditioning/strength but I like the feel of them after a workout. Also, when you take them off, you get about a round and a half of super fast footwork.

Dont do it!

Do not shadow box or throw anything with the ankle weights on.

What are you trying to accomplish with the weights? If your looking for more speed or power I would suggest just doing 100 Kicks each leg on the bag, full power, 1 kick at a time. This will improve your speed, your power, and your technique. If 100 is easy, add another 100 and keep going.

If you want to do leg exercises with ankle weights, I would look into the TKD style leg exercises, where you hold your leg out extended and do figure 8's etc. That type of thing, "holding" the leg out.
