This is the Anime and Manga thread, up to version 31. This is a place to give reviews, look for suggestions, and discuss whatever you may be watching/reading.

If you are new to these threads, then welcome. We've been a fixture of the Mayberry for over two years now. There are a bunch of well informed regular posters, and people are more than willing to give suggestions. The one thing to keep in mind: there have been over 30,000 posts in these threads talking about well over a thousand different titles. It would be impossible to list everything in this OP, so I've decided to a list the works that are among the most often recommended. Please feel free to bring up anything you'd like, but remember, just because it isn't in the OP doesn't mean nobody else likes your favorites.

Streaming Video (Hulu/Crunchyroll/etc)
Many good shows are available through video services such as Hulu and Crunchyroll (Netflix used to be a good source for anime, but they've dropped most of their library in the last year or so). The following are links to some of the better series available. If you have anything you think should be added, mention them or PM me, and I'll add them to the list (please include the URL).

News and Information
There are quite a few good sites to get news and information about anime/manga. Here are some of the most useful:
Anime News Network - Also referred to as "ANN", this site has lots of headlines, season previews, video releases, and other such info
Baka-Updates Manga - This site is an excellent resource for looking up information on manga. It has author info, series ratings, and release info on scanlation progress.
My Anime List - A useful resource that allows you to track what you've watched and give a score or review.
Anime Database - Good research tool for finding series, with searches by genre, production studio and more. Also lists fansub groups who may be working on a title.

Hi,

What is the name of the Gundam series, where a pilot and a princess get stuck on a snowy planet, and he uses the Gundam's lightsaber to melt the ice and create a hotspring pool?

thanks

I'm looking to expand and update the OP for this thread series. I've added in the "News and Information" section with useful links. Feel free to bring up more that you think should be added.

Anime and Manga Top 5 Poll!
Also, a new section idea that got brought up at the end of the last thread was to have a "Top Series" poll. So for anybody who would like to participate, fill out the following form (quote me and just fill in the entries after the asterisk):
Top Anime
  • Action/Adventure
  • Drama/Mystery
  • Fantasy
  • Horror/Survival
  • Slice of Life/Romance/Comedy
  • Sci-Fi/Mecha
  • Sports

Top Manga
  • Action/Adventure
  • Drama/Mystery
  • Fantasy
  • Horror/Survival
  • Slice of Life/Romance/Comedy
  • Sci-Fi/Mecha
  • Sports
You don't have to fill out every space or every genre or do both Anime & Manga lists. Do how much or how little you want. The way I'll score it is that your #1 entry will get two points, and #2-5 will each get a single point. That way only #1 is weighted differently and and you don't have to spend a lot of time worrying about the exact order. Also, feel free to put a series under multiple genres if you think it deserves it. I'll be posting mine shortly.

EDIT: Here is my personal entry for the poll. The anime section is pretty incomplete (I haven't watched anything new in years now), but I'm happy with my manga list. I'm looking foward to seeing what everybody else chooses.

You can always some sort of image of "questionable nature" in spoiler tags to put your early thumbprint on this thread too, T.

Just make sure it's actually a thumbprint and not something else.

Don't worry, you've been immortalized in the OP (check under "Old Threads").

latest ping pong was good

a minor thing to me is the time progression

Awww!you guys are so sweet *happiness tears* hahah

JBS I looked at your list, I can't recall do you not read Ippo?

I know exactly what you're talking about, but can't remember either.

I do, but it's on my 6-month list so I don't follow the releases as they come out. I like it, it just doesn't quite make my top five list for sports series, mostly because it's too bloated and ponderous. Some great characters and great fights, but the pacing once you get past the first ~400 chapters is abysmal.

Where would you place Baby Steps?

It would be in my Top 10 for sports series. Ippo, Baby Steps, and Ping Pong were all ones I considered for the list, but I ultimately went with RRR.

Mobile Suit Gundam: the 008th MS Team. My favortie UC Gundam series :D

RRR is up there for me as well, still hoping for a spin-off. To tell the story on how Riki got back into boxing and how he got the chance to challenge Thunder in the end for the World Title. Kind of like GTO: Shonan 14 days.

Thanks, gonna re-watch

not gonna lie, I remember the pilot's and girl's relationship being heartbreaking. I never finished the series but I doubt they end up together.

I just did a google search and the best match I could find to that description was Gundam Seed Destiny (episode 24), but I've never actually seen it so I have no clue if that's right.

EDIT: or maybe not, I'd trust Total Immortal on this more than my random googling.
EDIT2: Yeah, after a little more searching 8th MS Team episode 7 is the one you're looking for.

Powerful Rookies as your #1 Sports manga. It's my #2 behind REAL.

(Excluding Martial Arts manga)
