This is the Anime and Manga thread, up to version 26. This is a place to give reviews, look for suggestions, and discuss whatever you may be watching/reading.

If you are new to these threads, then welcome. We've got a number of regular posters who have seen/read a lot, and people are more than willing to give suggestions. The one thing to keep in mind: there have been over 25,000 posts in these threads talking about hundreds of different works. It would be impossible to list everything in this OP, so I've decided to a list the works that are among the most often recommended. Please feel free to bring up anything you'd like, but remember, just because it isn't in the OP doesn't mean nobody else likes your favorites.

    Popular Suggestions:
    Anime
    Akira
    Aria
    Azumanga Daioh
    Baccano
    Casshern Sins
    Claymore
    Code Geass
    Cowboy Bebop
    Death Note
    Evangelion
    Fate/Zero
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (the first series is quite a bit different and was done before the manga was finished)
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
    Ghost in the Shell
    Gintama
    Golden Boy
    Initial D
    Last Exile
    Legend of Galactic Heroes
    The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Mobile Suit Gundam: 8th MS Team
    Monster
Ninja Scroll (Movie is better than the TV series)
    Nodame Cantabile
    Outlaw Star
    Planetes
Rurouni Kenshin, Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal
    Samurai Champloo
    Spice and Wolf
    Space Brothers
    Trigun
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (the original is a classic, but shows its age)
And just about anything by Studio Ghibli: Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc

    Manga
    20th Century Boys
    Again!!
    All Rounder Meguru
    Berserk
    Break Blade
    The Breaker
    Crows, Worst
    Dorohedoro
    Gantz
    GTO
    Hajime no Ippo
    Historie
    Histories Strongest Disciple Kennichi
    Holyland
    Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru
    The Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer
    Mushishi
    One Piece
    Pluto
    REAL
    Rookies
    Slam Dunk
    Tough
    Tower of God
    Until Death Do Us Part
    Vagabond
    Vinland Saga
    Yotsubato!

Another couple images that list a lot of different series. Some of these will be better than others, but it's a good resource to look up different series that you may not have heard of before.
    Two things:
    1) The forum started acting strangely recently and is automatically resizing images. I have no control over this right now, so to make the text legible you'll have to right click and select "view image"
    2) A quick warning regarding some of these: there is some seriously adult and disturbing series on this list. I have read most of these and I would be careful of: Franken Fran, MPD Psycho, Freesia, Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, and especially Tokyo Akazukin (so fucked up I could barely finish the first chapter).

    Hulu/Crunchyroll/etc
Many good shows are available through video services such as Hulu and Crunchyroll (Netflix used to be a good source for anime, but they've dropped most of their library in the last year or so). The following are links to some of the better series available. If you have anything you think should be added, mention them or PM me, and I'll add them to the list (please include the URL).

I don't think we've done something like this for a while: list your favorite series *by genre. Feel free to break up the lists however you want (like doing separate lists for anime/manga/movies; use any genres you feel like). If you can try not to do more than one or two choices per entry. Tough, I know, but I think it'll help keep lists from getting super long. If you really want to, break up the genres into finer sub-genres (like I did with Fantasy/Dark Fantasy).

    Here's my list for manga:
Action/Adventure: Dragon Ball, Tower of God
    Dark Fantasy: Berserk, Dorohedoro
    Drama: Space Brothers, REAL
Fantasy: Ran to Haiiro no Sekai
    Historical: Historie, Vagabond
    Horror: I am a Hero
    Martial Arts: The Breaker
    Mecha: Break Blade
    Racing: Countach, Initial D
    Slice of Life: Again!!, Bakuman
Science Fiction: Akira, Battle Angel Alita
    Sports: Rookies, RRR
Action-Romance-Fantasy-Comedy: The Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer

Here's a genre list to give some ideas, but don't feel like you need to use all of them or limit to just these:
    Genre
    Action/Adventure
    Comedy
    Drama
    Ecchi/Adult
    Fantasy/Dark Fantasy/Supernatural
    Historical
    Horror/Survival
    Martial Arts
    Mecha
    Romance
    Slice of Life/School Life
    Science Fiction/Cyberpunk/Space Opera
    Sports/Racing
    Suspense/Mystery

    Target Audience
    Josei
    Seinen
    Shounen
    Shoujo

*edited to clarify what I meant, not really necessary to change or even follow the suggestion

Genre: Depends. Each genre has something it can offer if done well, but a good drama can't be beat in my opinion.
Action/Adventure: Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood, Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer
Comedy: Daily Lives of Highschool Boys, Welcome to the NHK
    Drama: Welcome to the NHK
Ecchi/Adult: Don't watch too much of this, I'll consult Takun.
Fantasy/Dark Fantasy/Supernatural: Really enjoying Spirit Circle so far, but I'd have to say Berserk.
    Historical: Vinland Saga?
    Horror/Survival: Shiki
    Martial Arts: All Rounder Meguru
    Mecha: Code Geass
Romance: Not sure on this one, but maybe Our Happy Days.
Slice of Life/School Life: Space Brothers
Science Fiction/Cyberpunk/Space Opera: Space Battleship Yamato 2199
    Sports/Racing: Kuroko's Basketball(Yeah I said it)
    Suspense/Mystery: Monster

These are a mix of anime/manga with no preference between the two mediums. In some cases, like Kuroko's Basketball, the anime is infinitely better than the manga.

If you want some decent movies to watch, I recommend Sword of the Stranger, Wolf Children and the Kara no Kyoukai movies.

Well you guys posted most everything I can think off so I'll just a few others that I think deserve more love.

    Let's Lagoon

    Ran to Haiiro no Sekai

    Yome ga Kore na Monde.

    Vovnich Hotel

    Nichijou

Pokemon Adventure(in honor of the recent releases)

    Emma

    Bride's Story

    Gisele Alain

Most everything has either been posted already or I need to sift through my backlog to find what else I've got. The first four are all quirky anime except for Let's Lagoon which is like Blue Lagoon + Odyssey of Flight 33 and the last three are all historicals.

Yeah, we released Shamo today. Has a mean cliffhanger to finish the volume. Don't know when volume 31 is expected to go for sale.

    Colorful:

A movie about a guy who got a second chance in life but in a body of a 14 year old boy who committed suicide. In order to stay in that body he has to figure out his past mistakes and reform before his time limit runs out.

Pretty serious movie that deals with bullying, loneliness and family dysfunction. The main character, Makoto had a difficult time adjusting to his second life and dealt with it by overcompensating or being mean spirited. Instead of reforming he continued to live in misery. He was a despisable person in the first half of the movie with very little redeeming qualities. I can understand a character having flaws but he was just an ungrateful asshole.

He eventually makes a transformation but it felt underwhelming since he gave me very little reason to root for him and also because it wasn't caused by introspection.

It really does need a lot more love as do several other series from Enterbrain and Comic Beam if only because they're art styles are so aesthetically pleasing and stunning.

It runs in the same magazine as Otoymegatari. I just can't put it above that. It's an absolute joy to read, though. I need to catch up.

No that's what I mean. All of those manga that run on their magazines deserve a lot more love if for no other reason than their art just being so damned beautiful to look at.
