Andre Galvao with Kevin Howell - Drill To Win - First Impressions

Fuck it, I'll buy it later this week.

I ordered it but Amazon won't ship it till the 9th with free shippping.

got it. like how it is laid out . all the good drills + a ton more. this is perfect for me as I'm the kind of guy who doesn't learn individual techs/subs that easy. I need the drills (like these) to get me into position and then my body will figure out the rest (if that makes sense). I need bigger pieces of the puzzle, like drills and flows moreso than individual techs. I also think that following the timer it shows for the drills will be better/ funner than jogging/ push up warm up most do

I appreciate the kind words... these books are a labor of love and I appreciate the support, it makes our sacrifice well worth it and encourages me to finish Leo's book!

Kevin Howell

I know you mention Leo's book. Any idea on what the status is with Neil Melanson's Triangles from the Guard??? His last mention of it was in Feb of this year and he stated he was waiting on the publisher and also advised he's got a series of books lined up and ready to shoot. Victory Belt puts out solid material and I've been looking forward to Galvao's book and Melanson's book for quite a while. Any info would be appreciated.

Definitely some awesome drills in this book. I'd recommend it for sure.

iamdiesel - not sure who is doing Melanson's book. Usually, I handle all of the new BJJ books (w the exception of Marcelo Garcia that was signed before with Glen and Erich and handed off), and I am not sure who is writing that one.

As for me, I am just plugging away at Leo Vieira's design and Dave Camarillo's organization.

my only gripe with the galvao book is the white gi against a white background and both guys wearing a white gi.

so i got my book , today is day 3

anyone else going to follow this day by day for the 365 days

like it says in the book , i dont just do the required stuff for the day
im going to randomly do drills from earlier in the book

RibCrusher, originally the book was shot against a black back drop, but we decided to remove them from the background to layer them like movement. Unfortunately, we had already shot tens of thousands! Perhaps in future editions, the publisher will darken Andre and Marcel so that their shadows are more pronounced.

I just got the book in the mail today and it looks really interesting. Can't wait to get into it.

Does anyone know if there is a book similiar to it for wrestling or judo (full of drills with some techniques)?

Got the book a few hours ago and have already read it and practiced a lot of the drills. The best instructional by far, or you shouldn't even compare this to other instructionals on the market. It contains so much more than 30 techniques and some bonusmaterial. This book shows and explain why and how you should move when doing BJJ. I wish my english was better because I can't really express how good it is.

BUY IT!

here's my very big question:

Is there enough content for solo drilling and practice? Guys at my gym can't get off the mat fast enough after class so there is no one to really drill with. I can probably corner someone for about ten minutes a week.

I'm feeling this. But I just got an e-mail from a teammate recommending this book like none other. And considering that I also loved Andre's segment in Arte Suave, I'm probably picking up a copy this month at the local B&N.

i glanced through my friends... i have tyo say it was REALLY clear.

I hate you all.

I just ordered this on amazon a minute ago after reading this thread. The book looks very useful and the instruction is concise yet extremely informative.

Andre Galvao's Drill to Win - 12 Months to Better Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is off to print and this is the final cover.

So, as I wait patiently for the Galvao book to arrive on a slow boat from China (literally), I thought I would provide a couple of sample shots from the book. As I said earlier, the book has been proofed, approved, and sent off to print. That means, the final step is basically printing and shipping. I am euphoric, but I keep myself grounded by working day and night on Leo Vieira's book. No rest for the weary...

On to the book itself. Drill to Win is dedicated toward monumentally improving one's BJJ. Andre shot what felt like 300 techniques and we included every single thing. The book includes diet, strength and balance conditioning, stretching, the basic movements, takedowns, passing, guard attacks and retention, escapes and defense, transitions, and sooooo much more. To efficiently show so much movement, we layered the photos to mimic action, and so far, our peer reviewers have indicated that it works well. We're really happy to do something different with the media (books) and you guys will be twice as shocked when you see Leo's. Anyway, here's a sample of things to come!

A sample of the book's content. Basically, the book follows a one year gameplan to improve your jiu-jitsu using drills. All rep ranges are at a minimum. The more you drill - the better!

Attack from escape!

The previous two page spread is dedicated to removing the hooks to set up your dominant top game transitions.

While this spread focuses on passing off of a realistic passing defense. The drills have to reflect reality! (the two shadowed pics are a problem with how the blog uploaded the pic - the pics are not like that in the book)

Well, I honestly hope that everybody loves the book and that you get a great insight into not only how Andre got so good, but how to hit your own grappling goals as well.

Happy Training,
Kevin Howell

Mine should be around the UPS warehouse somewhere :) Going to pick it up tomorrow!
Got mats at the gym I do weightlifting everyday so I'll be using this book to drill in the morning and then class at night! Jiu Jitsu Life!

I'll say this: the book is really well put together and taught really well. However if you have a base on nutrition already (we have a whole of forum on it here know your way around a gym and finally do a lot of common drills already then this book is probably better for you to get at the library. If your school pretty much skips the drills or does the same over ones over again then there is a lot in this book to offer.

This book isn't for me, but I think it would be great for a teacher. Its full of lots of great drills to implement during your warmups and training. I didn't want it just because I don't know when I would be able to do them. He shows a lot of cool stuff like "exercise ball sprawls." I'm sure that its a great drill, but when am I going to have access to an exercise ball on the mat? I can't just show up with one. Classes are very organized, and it would be hard to find a partner to do them with. If you have access to a mat to do these whenever you wish though, then this book is probably great.

I feel the same way. I was looking through it at Borders today and while most of the drills are really cool it's unrealistic for me to even begin to think that I could do these daily.. especially with a partner. If anything i'll just have to go back to borders and steal a few of the solo drills for home.
