Anyone else think this should of been a DQ? I mean spitting out your mouth piece is one thing thats understandable but when you cut the tape off the gloves to give your man time to recover that is straight up blatant and should be ruled a DQ.

They said Angelo dundee did the same thing when a British Fighter knocked a young cassius clay Silly he cut the gloves and took a few minutes to tie it up.

Even if the tape-cutting were deliberate it had no real effect. Berto didn't seem to have been injured very much by the knockdown and then had a minute to recover.

Even if you think he wasnt that hurt, it still is disgraceful to blatantly rip off the tape from the gloves. The corner thought he was hurt if they did that act and did everything possible for Berto not to get knocked out in the next round.

Why should the fighter be DQ'ed for his corner's actions?

Well, a fighter can be docked points & DQ'd for his corner's actions if they're blatant enough, but for the most part the officials try to do their best not to allow it to happen too often. But sometimes, there's no alternative.

It might not seem fair to the fighter, but ultimately in a two man contest, the fighter is responsible for his corner's actions & has to pay if what they're doing is giving him ( or her ) an unfair advatage.

It's even more strictly enforced in the amateurs.
I've seen plenty of point deductions & DQs in the amateurs for any number of infractions by fighter's coaches.

As for last night's piece of work, I say no big deal. It was just a little trick of the trade.
A wee bit of cheating for an extra bit of rest, sure. But, it only happened once & they otherwise conducted themselves properly.

And it's not as if they were blatant about their actions & pulled the tape loose right infront of the ref & the corner inspector. They just discretely "helped it along". :icon_twis

I haven't seen this myself but several friends of mine have said that it oughtta have been a DQ.

yup and I feel bad for Cosme That could of been his big shot just like when Baldo beat zab judah. It was very unfair cause the corner took off all the tape then started un tying the freaking gloves and tying back the glove the ref tried his best to hurry up the fight. But I would of DQ the fight or deducted another point because of that action,Cosme was ready to go and you can see he was wanting to go for the ko but he was being held back by that dispicable action.

It shouldn't have been a DQ, and deducting a point was moot, Berto still won a pretty wide decision. Could it have saved him from a KO? It's possible, but a DQ would have been far more controversial than what went down.

What I dont get is why the ref let Berto sit down while this was all happening. He was sitting their resting after a knockdown, that was ridiculous. Whether he was really hurt or not is irrelevant.

to me it was an act of Desperation on Bertos corner.

The ref should have made him fight with one glove when the 1 min timer was up. More typical boxing BS.

that was really blatant; but corners do that kind of ish all the time, give their guy a chance to reacclimate himself, recover from being hurt/etc

berto is good looking-gifted-exciting and skilled; they aren't gonna let all that go, not when they can stretch the rules so as to give their guy a better chance.

berto was well ahead on the card docking a point would have been worth it and given berto more time to recover.

the corner did what the corner is supp to do cover their guy and give him the best chance to comeback and win...berto did that

No offence, but:

That is the single most retarded post I've read on Sherdog in quite some time.

Good work.

Wow, I just watched the fight from my DVR.... that's absurd.

DQ would have been wrong, point should have been taken (not that it would have changed the scoring much) but he looked like he was out on his stool for a while. Kind of a bush league move by his corner.

He should have been DQ'd, he was badly hurt from that knockdown and went down twice from that 1 punch, when he wwalked back to his corner it was obvious that he was badly hurt and on unsteady legs. Without that extra minute to recover Berto would have been knocked out probably, he never saw that shot coming at all.

blatant cheating like that shouldn't be tolerated in boxing, refs need to take a stand asnd say if you try to pull this we'll dq you.

Otherwise a great performance by Berto though, great action fight

thanks man

that brang a smile to my face. Good to see honest fair fans are still around. I just get sick when people say it was allright or he shouldnt of been deducted or dqed...we shouldnt support that kinda blatant cheating.

Remember Panama Lewis? taking the stuffing out the glove he was banned from boxing for a reason.

Removing and re adjusting a glove is illegal you are not allowed to tamper with it and shouldnt, if tito trinidad had to be questioned about his wraps what andre berto's corner did is unexcusable. The took the damn tape off and then untied the glove and tied it back up again.

lol Just because people don't agree with the DQ idea, they aren't fair and honest fans?

Horseshit.

Panama Lewis had a History of cheating, he wasn't banned on one instance alone.

Panama Lewis was actually banned for wearing that Captain's hat.
