Just a thought but if you were in that situation (getting the kick checked so your shin cracks) would you throw the kick again? Full force? Silva sure did and it was crazy.

The first checked kick was thrown from the right leg and the second after which the fight was stopped was thrown from the left leg. Those were different legs.

this is pretty much spot on. Probably broke the fibula first and then without having that to support his tibia that kick was a bad bad idea.

I thought this was already known? Did Silva himself or his trainer say that there was a kick before the break that seemed to fracture or hurt his leg and it was weakened before the actual break. Could have swore I read that at the time or shortly afterwards.
