My heart says AS is greatest but my head says GSP is (stiffer competition). But AS won in much more spectacular fashion which seems to sway my opinion a bit

anderson is the greatest, and has the most complete arsenal of tools. some of his competition wasn't that great, but when he DID have good comp... well, look at what he did to vitor. fucking sniper.

All I know is its going to be a sad day when Silva retires. We've been lucky to see him fight.

GSP could beat people standing and GSP could beat people by dominating them on the ground.

As you said, he faced a lot tougher competition. He also has beaten everybody he's fought, With only 2 losses. I'd say if you just go by legacy GSP is much better. But who's really to know? Greatest fighter is such a subjective thing with so many factors.

Both, Anderson is the greatest fighter to grace MMA, not just the UFC.

I would say he is the best ever due to how he won the majority of his fights, he literally made the best in the division look terrible, the only fight he looked human in was vs Sonnen the first time and even then he still won.

People want to discredit him and state Jones is the best, sure Jones is dominant and has a great streak going for him...but he doesnt have the finishing ability that Silva has...and I doubt he ever will, Jones imposes his size which imo is his best attribute...Silva just Imposes his will and destroys fighters.

Silva > Jones for GOAT and Most exciting to watch.

Hes def the most spectacular fighter but not the greatest one.

He is sure one of the best and probably have the most spectacular finishes but Jones is one step above Anderson and GSP imo.

GOAT= Jones

2. Anderson
3. GSP

(in the ufc)

Silva is definitely one of the greatest strikers we've ever seen in MMA his hellbow uppercut, backward jab KO, and front kick to the face will probably always be played in MMA reels.

Georges unwillingness to finish off opponents and to just be content to jabbing and rassling is probably why he'll never get my vote for GOAT.

Meh. I know that's why a lot of people think that rules him out, but I don't see why people think finishes matter so much personally.

He was an extremely dominant fighter who stopped getting as many finishes after his ACL tear, but he still managed to dominate his division for years after that surgery. He was the definitive mixed martial artist, having a completely well rounded skill set.

This. What a lot of people don't realize is that when Anderson beat Sakurai in 2001 in Shooto, Sakurai was widely considered by many as the #1 P4P fighter at that time, with a record of 18-0-2.

Been fighting the best for a long time.

If you think "winning" is all there is to greatness then GSP is greater.

For some reason never too impressed...Travis Lutter, James Irvin, Forrest Griffin, Franklin fights were always easy for him...he is definitely great, but should have fought some better guys...

GSP is great, especially for people who got to see him dominate. The question is, are his performances great enough to be revisited by the next generation of fans who never saw him. Most of these fans will be watching the fighter of their eras, if they are going to look back, they are going to want a reason. That is why the highlight reels and finishes are important, they live on forever and get revisited by future generations. It takes 25 minutes to truly appreciate GSP's dominance for one fight. You can watch an entire highlight reel for both Fedor or Anderson in less than 25. So if we are talking about immortality, which is pretty much what GOAT status is, you've got to have performances that will live on forever. Like Anderson going Matrix on Forrest.

Damn Zuffa, if you are gonna create threads to hype up the PPV tonight, at least pick a topic that doesnt have several posts on the first page already. Should merge this with the other Anderson GOAT argument threads.

The point of this thread is to argue NOT who's the greatest (GSP or AS). It is to discuss whether AS is really the greatest...or people are just confusing it with being the most spectacular which is easy to do

Being great while still being spectacular, entertaining and creative.

That's pretty damn great to me.

I think that's an unfair way to look at that. We aren't talking about the most popular, we're talking about the greatest.

Georges greatness cannot be held in a highlight reel.
