Cole Winokur and Nicolas M. Sato are set to begin production later this year on a “sports horror film” entitled “Spirit,” which they say “highlights the extreme danger of weight cutting through a sports horror format.”

“Through this film, we hope to raise awareness of this critical issue in support of those that deserve it most – the fighters,” Winokur stated.

The pair hopes to crowdsource funding for the project through a Kickstarter campaign planned for an April launch. Production would then begin in June.

For more information on the project, including interviews with UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber and former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, check out Spirit-film.com.

Does anyone think that a regular old documentary would have been better for this topic?

What the hell are they going to do? Have them die and then come back to life as zombies?

I don't know. I think painting it as a horror can potentially get across the shitty experience of weight cutting better than a doc could.

Rather than just seeing the facts and hearing that it sucks, seeing a monster or something inhuman torturing you by your own will kind of hits harder. Idk tho maybe I'm putting to much thought into it.

"Sports horror"? That's lame. It's SPORROR ...!

idk. if it helps shed light and bring about change cool. maybe its entertaining. who knows.

Honestly I don't mind the concept. I just don't trust the execution. I think you could make a perfectly good horror movie off the story of a desperate fighter cutting weight and getting more and more delirious before a big fight. You could have him start seeing shit, leave it a little ambiguous on what is real and what isn't, do a whole character piece thing.

I jumped out of my seat when the tiramisu popped out.
