An example of how far MMA has to go in the striking

Andre wards kicks and knees probably suck. Elbows too...

He's a good boxer thought and props to him

The hook would of made it through because of the gloves.

Has anyone mentioned that you can't do that with mma gloves? Pat Barry got KO'd by Kongo trying to block like that.

Someone needs to break the TS's fingers so he can't type any more useless threads, or least hit him with a cattle prod everytime he posts.

When you train multiple disciplines, you're not going to be as proficient in any one discipline as someone who exclusively trains that discipline.
This, and I'm certain it's easier to block punches with 10-12 oz. gloves vs. 4 oz. gloves.

Can someone please post a sweet Fail gif so we can shut down this thread...thanks.

It's easy to be slick when you have:

  • only your hands to work with
  • giant gloves to block/absorb shots
  • no threat of kicks or knees
  • no threat of clinch fighting
  • no threat of the TD
Easy to be slick... You're far out.

True that. Blocking is not quite as effective in mma as it is in kickboxing or boxing. Avoiding the situation altogether is preferred in mma. Rampage blocked Wand's hooks nicely but lots of guys get dropped blocking strikes the way Ward is in the video.

Still awesome, technical boxing though. I love same hand sequences like with his right.

lol the defenses are all over the place. "you cant get that good because you are training multiple disciplines, blah" is bullshit.

Its the stances to defend TDs, smaller gloves where you cant defend as well, etc.. That dude would been KO'd with that left hook when it fucks his equilibrium up as it sneaks through to the back of the ear.

Todd Duffee alone set the sport back a few years

But yeah, this

and this

lmao'd @ that gif

I wonder how andre ward would deal with someone trying to slip his jab and go for a TD and then he drops his hands to stuff the takedown and eats a right hook on the jaw...

Rampage's blocking was adapted for mma. He blocks with his forearm and not his glove. Blocking could be more effective in mma if guys adapted

You gonna catch jab with your 4 oz glove?

someone post gif of that Asian guy catching punches with his hands

You don't think a jab can be parried with MMA gloves? You can parry a jab without any kind of gloves.

Expected defensive reaction from the segment of MMA fans who have no clue about other types of fightsport and resent them..

In reality, good boxing skills in themselves are not an impediment to defending TDs, kicks, elbows, etc. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Yes, skills need to be learned and tactics adjusted but that is not a reason to dismiss boxing.

It's much more difficult. With the bigger gloves in boxing, it enables you to deflect a lot more punishment. Plus the fact that they have no threat of kicks, elbows, takedowns etc makes it much easier to focus on just the boxing game. Not a surprise that MMA's boxing isn't on par, there are too many elements in play.

He looks pretty susceptible to a takedown there though sooo...can't compare the two sports

It's not, actually. The difficulty is in the timing and that doesn't change. Of course expecting MMA fighters to have similar boxing skills to someone like Andre Ward is unrealistic. There is plenty of criticism within MMA of MMA fighters not taking the time to actually learn how to box, though.
