An Analysis of the Howdy Choke (GIF Heavy)

From north south, you can capture one of your opponent

A common defence of the opponent is to turn into you to relive the downward pressure on their neck, this makes the Howdy extremely difficult to finish. However as the opponent turns in they expose themselves to the Darce choke. This is accomplished by pummelling your free arm under and past the opponent

The Howdy can also be used to transition to the Gift Wrap either transitionally or from the mounted Howdy. It is a relatively simple transition and can be done by grabbing the opponent

If the opponent pulls back from the C Lock or the modified straight arm lock they expose themselves to the V Lock (Americana). The beauty of this technique is that in defending the Americana, the opponent exposes them self to the Howdy setup again, making this an effective combination attack.

Really awesome. Thanks for this analysis. Never saw this move before.

Love these threads of yours Gambledub! Good work! My instructor teaches this technique, but i never took a shining to it because i could never really finish it even while drilling. But the transition to mount does look super easy from that position, and it looks like you could S mount really easy from there

Thank you for this, great analysis

Thanks!

Thanks, I never even thought about s mount, I might have to try it out lol

S mount from mounted howdy choke position, if you do try it out let me know how it goes!

Fat guy choke! I yell it every time I catch someone with it...

Excellent thread! Bravo! I use this choke all the time, can't wait to try some of these new set ups.

S mount from mounted howdy choke position, if you do try it out let me know how it goes!

I tried it from the mount and got reversed, I feel like it's technically possible, but unless your really flexible or have a ridiculously good base I dont think its happening. That being said it was only one attempt so who knows, I'm gonna give give it a go on my grappling dummy and see if that makes a difference or gives me some ideas.

I also thought about going to s mount from side control, maybe something like this...

But instead of sliding your leg back, turn your hips up slide your leg up and forwards and try to lock up s mount. Gonna have to bust the dummy out and give it a go!

Did you really just post an Ari Bolden instructional? :icon_conf

yeah I like to try and reference where I get my GIF's from, in case people like the technique and want a more in depth explanation. I know about Ari and his back story. I haven't seen that technique anywhere else, thats why its there.
