Americans getting too heavy!

Yeah, I heard 60% of the population is overweight. Its starting to really suck.

I'm overweight... and I have a bodyfat of around 12%. I look around and I see a fair number of fat people, but I also see a fair number of shitty methods for assessing obesity (BMI comes to mind)

When I heard the number of overweight Americans was like 60% I was shocked at first, but then I looked at it like Urban. Sure 60% is overweight is a very broad term. Sure you have the people with 30%+ body fat who are overweight, but you have to take into account people that have around 10% bf. They may be overweight, but they are in no way fat.

I think a better way to go about these studies would be to take the bf% of these people, instead of just going by their ideal weight. Now if 60% of the people in the US had a bf of over say 30%, then I think the study would hold more water.

If you go according to BMI, I'm right near the cutoff point between overweight and obese at 6'-0", 218 lbs. Interesting, considering I just checked my bodyfat two days ago and I'm at 9.5%. So yes, I agree: BMI = the devil.

BMI is total bullshit. This is the method they used for us in the military to determine who is over weight, and put them on a diet program, or discharge them. There are guys that are friggin 6'5" 260 lbs 28% body fat, but are allowed to stay in the military due to the BMI index. Then there are guys that are 5'9" 205 and are 10-12% body fat, ripped like a brick shithouse, but get discharged since they are "overweight" due to the BMI. Sickens me.

Wow, I've never heard that; horrible. BMI doesn't make any sense at all, I didn't know anyone who doesn't wear dentures still uses it.

Wait a minute, why are we slandering BMI?

BMI= Body Mass Index= Analysis of your weight according to percentage of your total weight from fat.

I think what everyone is trying to deride is:

IBW= Ideal Body Weight

This is a method often associated with BMI because it is based on BMI means for different heights; for example, young 6'5" males with a BMI in the recommended health range (7%-20%) average between 205-220 pounds. So that's your cookie-cutter IBW for young 6'5" men. It doesn't take into account bone frame size or lean mass of the individual; it doesn't take into consideration the BMI of the individual at all.

It's not BMI that sucks, it's how it's applied.

Here is a similar article released by Stats Canada a few weeks back

http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/fats/statistics.html

I do agree though that the BMI is used to justify poor decisions, i'm about the same size as fat_wilhelm 6'2" 220, i was up to about 230 before i started cutting out alot of fat and was just at that obese mark and i think i'm about the 10% BF range. The heart and stroke society actually feels that belt size is a far better inidicator of high risk of weight related illness. I think +40" for men and +35" for woman is considered to be a dangerous size.

I don't mean to appear to know the answers here because I still have much to learn about perfecting my body. However, it would apear to me that with all the scientific progress in the field of understanding the human body and the technological progress that has been made in the ways we can evaluate it, that there are far better methods than BMI.

Correct me if I'm wrong but BMI was developed in the 50s. The medical treatment, nutrition guidelines, and food supply where far different than the current ones. Therefore, humans now have different physical charicteristics than those of when BMI was developed.

All I'm saying is in the example where the army is handing down penalties based on BMI; surely they can afford some calipers for BF% and a stopwatch for a 2 mile run time.

Similarly, there have to be better methodologies to determine the realative "overweight" % of Americans. Random bodyfat testing or even something as simple as getting data from retailers on what pants sizes are being sold are two that just jump to mind.

The reason americans are fat because they have access to fat people clothes. No fat people clothes equals no fat people.:icon_chee

Why the hell you posting an article from bbc, and cbc? Too much fat for the rays to penetrate...give me a break. They arent leadlined. How about we discuss the scanners bouncing off rotten teeth ya freakin' red coats!

I had a couple of friends that were pretty big when I was in the military. They were always overweight but they did a bodyfat estimate using waist to neck girth ratio and they all got by fine. It wasn't the best messurement either but it was better than BMI. What killed me was seeing all of the 5'1"-5'4" girls that weren't really accounted for being 20-30 lbs overweight and having no problems, meanwhile my in shape friends were getting taped and warned to watch their weight.

I don't care if BMI isn't accurate the way it's implemented, though. Maybe that makes up for about 10% of those 60% that are overweight, but Americans are getting fat. Everyone is getting fat. I see it here in Italy, too. It's the invasion of McDonald's over here. I see the younger generation eating it and running around with little pot bellies. When I 10-15 I was as skinny as a rail, and so were most of my friends. People are eating so much junk now it's ridiculous. Holly shit I sound old talking like that. But it's true, in 10 years a lot has changed. I always hat seeing the Moms standing next to their fat kids just watching them eat all of this candy and fast food. My Mom hardly ever let me eat like that. and I'm thankful for that now.

Americans are so fat that they cannot be X-Rayed.

WOW. You pigs should be ASHAMED of yourselves. You know, when that happens, mabey you should look into Jenny Craig.
