I actually think that the two party system handicaps moderate candidates who would appeal to a broader range of people (and isn't ideologically married to a particular stance). I hate that if you are almost always expected to vote along party lines, or scuttle opposing legislation even if you may agree with it.

Eh, the fact is most people go into the voting booth to vote for a letter, not a name. The number of actual independent voters is very small, and many of those are just posturing to make themselves seem credible. Actually, this election it might be non-existent. No one is actually on the fence between Trump and Hillary, they are deciding whether or not to vote in general.
