Much to the surprise of many AMD could be showing working prototypes of the new Zen microprocessor on Weds. This comes well ahead of earliest estimates for the release of their new superchip. No doubt that AMD feeling the heat from the fact that Intel about to release a new upgraded chip possibly this week. In other news Intel may apparently be stuck in 14nm for sometime to come based on reports. It looks like the move to 10nm proving more challenging then they have originally estimated.

With Intel skipping the tock and creating a new processor, it makes you wonder if they found out what AMD was coming out with and had to come out with something a little more powerful.

. AMD says they're delivering 56% higher CPU performance since 2014, and on graphics performance claiming 53% better performance than Intel's current Core i7 line.

I'm hoping for an i5-6600k competitor.

They're lucky if their new processor tops the 5 year old i7 2600K. AMD is ass these days.

I defend AMD on their GPUs, because their price/performance ratio is usually slightly better than NVIDIA, even if their high end cards can't compete (and the 480 price/performance will be insane).

However, AMD CPUs are shit. There is no reason to buy one. Period. I don't know why they still make them, or who buys them.

Booom!!! Shot fired right across the bow of NVIDIA!

This is supposed to be a new chip from scratch instead of just an improvement.

Their new chip actually improves on the i7 by increasing the size of the pipeline. The reasoning is they execute more instructions per clock cycle. The other differences between the bulldozers design an ZEN is floating point unit per CPU the bulldozer splits the floating point unit between two CPU'S. Expectations of the new

What industry watchers have been saying is i7 core has not changed. The other is Intel has not moved to FinFET technology.

AMD thanks to huge progress from Samsung and Global foundries ZEN uses all the latest FinFET technology.

Intel move to 10 cores was because AMD Summit Ridge opening act was 8 core design targeting I7 Extreme.

ZEN is going to come in multiple designs but unlike their Polaris GPU it at first targeting high end applications.

They said they are only at first interested in high end workstation and PC's based on AM4 socket. The other odd part there are no support chips all the SATA and PCI bus logic is on chip.

It's going to be a crazy complex design and and from the sound of it expensive at first. It also sounds like they feel the APU business is the biggest business IE console.

AMD released the Polaris as a mid term product to give console vendors a GPU to drive VR and 4k video playback and limited gaming.

I expect all console vendors will be using some form of the bulldozers based APU with Polaris GPU. Microsoft leaks say that the new console performance is going to be at least 4 times better and they want to regain the performances crown. This may have forced Sony's hand.

Eagle eyed person at the Polaris announcement spotted the new ZEN 8 core Summit Ridge AM4 motherboard look no support chips. The chip has PCI bridge logic, USB and SATA logic on the CPU no need for many support chips. No reason was given for why they where not pushing it more or showing it off.
