I've kept my mouth shut about this but after watching the countdown to UFC 70 I have to ask. Why is it whenever they show fighters strength training they are using f'n machines and doing shit like leg extensions?! Its every single fighter. If they do deadlifts. squats, etc why dont they ever show it are they really going that far out of their way to trick everyone? I am a squat, deadlift, chins kinda guy so im not trying to sway anyone toward machines im just wondering if anyone has a legit answer.

im sure they just say make teh guns look big for the camera

Fighters and their strength coaches are probably under the misconception that you will become too huge and slow if you primarily do compound free weight lifts/exercises.

Ahh, I was thinking the same thing. Maybe somebody would know?!

because if they show them doing real routines the curl monkeys might stop watching, since they'd think the fighters could'nt be serious doing compounds. i mean how could you ever get "teh gunz" with squats.

They spend most of their time working on technique. They're strength training is secondary, and unfortunately, less than ideal. Look at Jeff Monson for a fighter with a solid strength routine.

Reading this just gave me a good reason actually.

Maybe its because they do not want to risk injury so close to a fight so they head over to machines just for maintenance purposes.

Monson is a fuckin beast. I saw him doing tire flips in a training video before his fight against Sylvia. That was pretty sweet. Too bad he lost the match though. :(

I dont think their strength coaches are stupid or ignorant. Fighters train for muscular endurance, not for maximizing their lifts. For example a fighter would train for squatting 2 plates for 50 reps, not for squatting 6 plates for 1-2 reps.

I noticed that. The bottom line is, we don't know why they do that. They could be uninformed, they could be doing if for maintanence before a fight, they could be doing if for injury prevention before a fight, they could be doing it for endurance, or they may not show their real routines...or it could be a combo. We don't know, all we know is that they are awesome fighters and their technique is top notch.

The worst was him going on the stair master for conditioning and punching with the cable machine.

Watching it made me want him to lose even more.

I think it's a muscular endurance thing. It's actually pretty mind boggling that a lot of top level fighters have what we consider terrible routines. They can't all be succeeding in spite of their training. Maybe S&P is not the be all end all for everyone.

They show Couture doing cleans all the time.

i was thinking the same thing.

i know with rich franklin, his camp has talked about how fights are won in the training room. The body is for image and marketting because no one wants to see some out shof shape guy fight. So they focus on asthetics when it comes to weights.

Its near their fight maybe and near their peak where they won't be doing any heavy strength and power gaining work at that time.

I never saw that.
Its almost always the same: They show him grappling, then they show doing some medicine ball work, then they show him doing cleans.
