Retiring is not a breach of contract... it never is... not in any sport. What a terrible double thread.
It's a fairly simple concept. He signed a 10 fight contract. He gets paid after each fight (per fight basis). The UFC & Silva/his manager can negotiate Silva's purse for each fight and the terms of the contract. Every fight could be worth 300k, or the UFC may try to back load the contract with larger purses for Silva in the second half of the contract, in hopes to entice Silva to keep fighting longer.
Ultimately, Silva can retire whenever he wants. If he retires now, he keeps the money he's earned thus far thru the fights so far under this contract. If he retires with 5 fights left on the contract, he keeps the money he's made from the first 5 fights in the contract. It's not as if the UFC only pays at the end of the contract, or that if you don't complete the contract you get fined - that would be ridiculous. The UFC could just cut everyone with 1 fight to go, claim they never completed the contract, and then get all their money back?
All it does is means that if he comes out of retirement, he's still under contract to the UFC. He can't just go and fight for another promotion without first negotiating his release from the UFC.
