So it's Official, America is currently the 9th fattest Country on the planet. Printed in Newsday on Feb. 11th of this year, that's where we stand. The ONLY Country that isn't a Pacific Island Country (where people have a common ancestry and genetic pre-disposition to being fat) more fat than America is Kuwait. Whereas China and India, two of the largest Countries in the World, have the least percentages of overweight population (16 and 29%), compared to our 74% of people over the age of 15. Factor in the "look at my fat ass kid" talk-show guests and I'm sure that percentage doesn't get any better.

According to the Journal of Biological Psychology, our number 1. eating disorder is binge-eating as well.

The funny thing about that is it makes perfect sense and afflicts more people than I think the population realizes. MOST people I've ever talked to in over 5 years working for GNC, skip meals. They eat MAYBE one full meal a day. This kind of thing typically leads to metabolic shut-down, so when the person finally gorges themselves on food, it'll get stored because the body thinks it's starving. People inflict that upon themselves most significantly by skipping breakfast. They don't seem to understand that after a significant fast, it's best to feed the body. Typically lunches or dinners are bigger than they should be. Crazy part is most of these people want appetitie suppressants as a solution.

What year is that graph from?

Well...I have done my part this easter season.......peeps be damned!!

I'm not sure. Pulled it from this blog from yesterday.

Unfortunately there's no dates or references that I can see.

Mike those are some huge numbers and they are for obese people too not just overweight.

Thank god i'm only 28.9 :D

I know, so who knows where they got it from, or how accurate the sources are. I just threw it up there because this thread reminded me of it. Interesting that the two asian countries are the lowest, though, as in the study you cited.

Is it just me, or does it seem really odd that Kuwait is stated as being the only country (non-Pacific Island) "fatter" than the USA?

Bah, everyone knows BMI is a load of crap when it comes to athletes, anyways. :icon_chee

lol I thought that was wierd, too. But then again, I've never been to Kuwait. I might go and get off the plane and be like "HOLY JESUS YOU FUCKERS ARE FAT!!" But who knows? Though they are significantly smaller. According to the Newsday Article a favorite past-time in UK Airports is "spot the fat American(s)".

A related topic: restaurant portion sizes. I was recently in Vegas in Feb, and we ended up eating at the Pepper Tree on the strip one morning. I was BLOWN away at how much food was on my plate. And I'm a pig; a bottomless pit type pig. But the amount was obscene.

I just chalked it up to "Everything is bigger in Vegas"

My in-laws just got back from a few months in Arizona---and they mentioned the same thing. They were shocked at the portion sizes. And my Father in-law is a country-raised Ukrainian. That guy can eat twice as much as me, and he's twice my age.

Now my wife and I eat out quite a bit, being in the double-income-no-kids situation; I don't know if it's fair to sterotype based only on my experience, but portion sizes in Canada are a fair bit smaller. I never leave hungry, but I never leave with food left on the plate.

Is this just some anecdotal shite, or true-to-story?

Hey you should have told me you were coming.

There was another study recently linking eating out to contributing to the binge-eating phenominon. Anyone ever been to IHOP lately? Years ago when I was engaged and my fiance liked to go there I'd always say "WHY do they serve so much food!?" And when you're out, spending $$, you're given the distinct impression you should get your money's worth.

Mike i never knew you were a dink.

I think you may be onto something I've been to very few places where the portion sizes were more then i could finish in a sitting, sometimes when you get an appitizer and a meal it gets to be a little much. For the most part the chain places seem to be reducing the size alot actually.

In Kuwait theres basically a whole population with too much money and time on their hands....alcohol is illegal, what are they gonna do?

saudi arabia and the united arab emirates are closing in as well. i was amazed the last time i went to the UAE at how fat people were. Especially younger people, like kids and stuff. i mean, you spoil these rich little bastards rotten, and let them do whatever they want. what do you expect?

and some of them are FAT! i mean the arab diet is basically tons of rice and bread and red, fatty meat. factor in all the american companies and corporations that have been setting up shop for the past 10-15 years, and you have a recipe for disaster.

i wish i could get my parents and girlfriend to eat healthier.shit like this scares me.i hate it when people look at me like i'm crazy when i talk about how changing my diet has changed my life or are just dismissive about it.i mean they're not the worst eaters in the world, but there are things they could do to eat healthier and have a better overall sense of wellness.

What is the standard they are using to define "overweight"

While I would still probably agree with the numbers that Americans are fat, I just want to know what the criteria is. On the graph Mike posted it is BMI, which can skew the results some.

I don't think it skews the results any, not if the people are being weighed in-person for the purposes of the study. Doctors and scientists have eyes, I'm sure they can tell the difference between 240lbs of muscle and 240lbs of not muscle. And I can walk outside at any moment and see within 15 feet that the number sounds pretty accurate.

I'm quite surprised at the discrepancy between the US and Canada, wouldn't have expected that at all.

Don't go by that graph up there. We don't know when that was printed and it obviously doesn;t correspond with Newsday's report. I'm thinking it's a couple of years old...the graph that is.
