What's your opinion on why Jacob Volkmann could not finish Danny Castillo? It must be the record for most failed d'arce attempts in a single fight.

Jesus what a reference. That fight had so many choke attempts.

The 1st attempt in round 1 was the tightest. I remember Jacob locked it and trapped the bottom leg in half guard. He leaned so far towards the head that Danny hopped over top of Jacob but Jacob walked in for the marce angle finish and it got really deep but he lost control of the legs and then Danny was able to get to his base and scramble out. So for round 1 I think Jacob needed more time and better control over the legs.

In the other rounds I remember Jacob just had it from top half and Danny had either an underhook still sort of around Jacob or if Jacob had the underhook killed Danny was able to sneak a butterfly hook in. Danny has very good darce defense and has rode out other tight darces before (like Tony Ferguson's) and I think Danny isn't going to tap to anything but a clean choke. His neck is too tough and darces from top hal;f tend to be less clean than darces from say full mount or the marce/Homer Simpson angle.

If you rewatch the fight the attempt that gave Danny the most urgency with trying to escape was the top half to marce attempt in round 1. Also maybe Jacob’s arms were more tired in rounds 2 and 3? If Danny thought he survived the best attempt he may have had a mental edge too.

Nice to see Volkmann getting some respect on here. I never saw him get much press but I always bring him up as one of the more underrated MMA grapplers that I think for whatever reason we just didn't get to see reach their full potential in terms of results. he definitely had a killer brabo/darce choke. He may not have finished the one on Castillo but I've seen him finish them in no-gi matches as well as in multiple other MMA fights.

He did it multiple times. It became his entire (cringeworthy) schtick.

Thanks for the video. My finish % with the marce (the 2nd variation you showed) is low on better guys but I'll keep cracking away at it. Your first comment about
