Quoting Ali would his 1974 rope a dope work against Tyson or would Ali of 64 stick and move do best

I think first option make Tyson tired, not stick and move can always get caught

Ali is rightly favored by most people in a fantasy fight with Tyson but I think the rope a dope would be pretty dangerous against a guy with the speed and ability of Tyson.

I think an older version of Ali would lose to a prime version of Tyson at least a few times out of 10. IMO, in 1974 Ali was actually well past his prime. There's a reason his win over Foreman was considered so shocking.

Absolutely he couldn't move like he did in 60's so he rope a doped Ali was a genius , foreman was destroying everyone 5-1 underdog ? I think

Ali of 64 vs foreman ?

Ali of 74 would fare better . He simply wouldn't be strong enough to deal with Tyson in the 60's .Tyson has the most underatted left hook ever at HW and thats bc ppl are too mesmerised by his overall punching abilities . He was a Frazier 2.0 on that punch ,because he didnt measure it and could throw it at any angles with power /speed Frazier was not capable of and also shorter and more compact . Ali simply doesnt match well here but you would have to take the better chinned one who was a better counter puncher ,rope a dope or not .

What it all comes down to is if a left hooker ,slow on the feet at 185 pounds dropped Ali in the 60'she wil never fare well with such a quick footed two fisted power puncher like Tyson .His best bet is to be the better thinker/puncher and more durable fighter which 70's Ali was .

Can the rope tactic work on Tyson ? Yes ,but only if you think 10% chance is good though its a better chance then a 210 pound Ali running around the ring against an excellent ring cutter with a killer left hook that can match hand speed .

Let's ask BoxRec's hypothetical matchmaking prediction engine (something I just did minutes ago on another fantasy fight that could actually happen). It's a 50/50 fight according to their algorithm.

Prime for prime I'd probably go with Ali. Too bad we'll never know.

have anyone watch tape of Ali/Tyson in their respective primes. I'd guess at least 80% of those people pick Tyson. Tyson is not the better fighter but stylistically it's a terrible matchup for Ali.

There is no rope-a-dope with a prime Mike Tyson. He's going to hit you. In fact, you want Tyson right in the middle of the ring where you, as the opponent, have as much room as you can possibly get. The closest thing to Prime Tyson that Ali ever fought is the one fighter who truly made Ali look human in his prime. Joe Frazier. Prime Tyson was far more meticulous and precise, plus his speed and defense were better.

For years I've said it's just a really bad matchup for Ali. No matter whether it's circa 1964 or 1973. Ali just doesn't have the right skill set to beat a prime Tyson. I like the chances of a prime Bowe or Holyfield more.

Prime Ali loses to Tyson. Foreman Ali might win. Tyson was made to fight guys who move and jab no one ever beat him by moving. Foreman Ali does what tyson hated the most and that was clinching and smothering without backing up too much.

I agree with PivotPunch. Rope a dope is very risky against Tyson, the possibility of Mike having Ali against the ropes, I could see Ali getting chopped down under that assualt. As already said he's a quicker, faster, heavier, more powerful and explosive version of Frasier. However, that Ali was the best version stylistically to fight Tyson. Trying to fight Tyson in the center of the ring, Mike wasn't too easy to hit. Head bobbing Slip the jab, slip the jab, slide in behind Ali's straight; left hook to the body, right cross upstairs, duck, uppercut. If Ali was still there and hadn't moved out at distance, Mike would throw, that body uppercut people fell in love with. Dude was relentless. Ali would have to tie him up and slow the fight down, Tyson had some of the best inside game ever to go with his footwork, speed, defense and power from the outside. I still think Tyson in his prime is underrated.
