If his name is Gordon Shumway and he speaks English, why didn't the family call him Gordon?

Yes, I know ALF is an acronym for Alien Life Form, but he literally has a name that is common on Earth.

The Tanners should have been more respectful and called him Gordon.
 
Maybe they would if he'd stop trying to eat the fucking cat.
