So I've never really been one who drinks alcohol regularly or in any significant amount. I would say I average a glass of wine every 2 weeks. As a result my tolerance is incredibly low. Example:

Last night went some friendses house for like a dinner party. The husband is a mad Iranian party animal and was constantly trying to give me whiskey shots. I managed to only have one over the course of the evening and also a small glass of red wine.. like a third of a standard wine glass.

This morning I feel sick in the stomach and have a mild headache and can really feel it is from the small amount of alcohol I had.

So my question is (if you drink):

What was your tolerance like when you first drank alcohol?

How did it change over time?

What's it like now?

PS. Yes I am aware I'm a huge bitch. People find it hilarious given I'm 6'2 and +110kg.

Yes, it's like anything else. But what you choose to drink, specifically, has huge ramifications. With regards to hangovers, the more congeners or sugar, the worse it will be.

I'm McGregor size and can hammer down a 12er, then close a bar.

Been in training camp since age 12, unfortunately. Not particularly proud of it, but hey, it's my vice.

I can drink a bottle of spirits after work (700ml) and go to work every day of the week.

Nothing to be proud of, but I am Australian so this is Beginner Drunk.

Serious question: are you Asian? This Chinese guy I used to work with would be absolutely smashed and bright red after half a beer.

Depends how old you are

There’s your mistake right there bud. You can drink whiskey or wine, in whatever amount you can handle, but you can’t drink both. They go to war inside you.

I’m with you, at my worst I would drink 4 bud ice tall boys and wake up everyday at 430am for work.

I still do it but damn it I’ll stop next tomorrow.

It's good not to have a tolerance. It's cheaper and means you aren't a booze hound. The worst part is when you get a reverse tolerance. Or basically you've drank so much alcohol that your body no longer process it properly and you can't drink as much as you used to. Then you know you got issues.

That, actually, is a myth. I mix whisky/vodka with wine/beer all the time, it really depends on how drunk you already are when you attack the hard stuff.

It takes time to build a tolerance, however, I would not rush it. Enjoy your low tolerance while you still have it. Like the Aussie that posted above, I was drinking a liter of whisky over 2 nights and was not missing a beat at work. Not something I'm proud of, but that's where you end up if you keep drinking regularly. I slowed my roll recently because I was getting a little worried about my liver long term.

When I was young, a watered down long island at the club would get me happy, a second one would get silly...I was too poor to get a third.

If I drink Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, it increases with each day. 4 beers (around 6-7%) over 4-5 hours on Friday is good enough for me. On Saturday if fights are on, I may have 6-7 over 6-8 hours. On Sunday if it's nice out, I can have 8-9 throughout the day before going to bed early. Never get hungover, but I drink slow , drink water, and eat before bed.

First time I drank alcohol was my 18th birthday. My best friend and I got absolutely shitfaced off of a pint of Smirnoff. It was such a horrible taste that we had to mix it with Koolaid and then Gatorade. We were both hung over for days because of all that sugar in our guts. It was brutal and horrible and we didn't end up drinking again for a few months.

Lol @ being hungover for days

4 tall boys was your worst? Damn I’ve drank that for lunch before

On a serious note I used to have a massive tolerance when I was younger, was a bartender and we partied hard and went to class in the am every damn day.

Now I drink like every other week at the max, hard alcohol hurts me bad, but beer I can still drink till there isn’t any beer left.

I killed a 30pack by myself cooking crawfish a couple weeks ago with no problems. If I had had some shots I would have been hurting

This is what probublay happened to me, had an insane tolerance for over a decade. Now I can’t drink hard alcohol or wine without getting fucked up EASY.

Beer is no problem though. And I don’t drink much more now too so there is that also

I member downing 6 500ml red horse bottles before calling it a day.

What would be the typical bud/coors ratio of that @steve38?

Yeah. One of my pals is an alcoholic. He thought he was hiding it from us but he'd turn into a drooling idiot after a few shots

I think it has more variables than one but my tolerance is up there. I don't drink much anymore -usually only on New Years actually- but I can still put down almost an entire bottle of Vodka on my own. Grey Goose is my go to there and I'd say it takes roughly 8-10 shots to get me drunk. Not hammered, but a solid drunk where I can just keep steadily drinking if I want to.

That's not too bad imo. I'm also not a beer or wine guy. Never have been.

Im 40 now and I rarely drink however as mostly everybody I used to drink a lot when younger and I mean teenager...I stopped drinking around 23-24

I think your alcohol tolerance stays with you, even now I can hold my liquor "fairly" ok, on the rare ocassions when I drink I think I do pretty ok

Also what people call "tolerance" is not really strictly body "tolerance".... when you drink nobody is holding a competition (well on most cases) basically you can make your drink last A LOT...while other idiots drink one after another and after another and get all shitfaced... you can even do this with strict drinkers, just stand up, tell a joke, stay out of group shots, make your drink last long...all these are behavioral techniques that you basically learn with time and experience....thats why I said "tolerance" is not strictly "tolerance" its basically knowing how to carry yourself when everybody is drinking
