Alabama, Michigan Governors Vow To Bar Syrian Refugees From Their States

Oh heaven forbid a figure of authority wishes to watch their borders. Oh NO!!! People are being lined up to the gas chambers already.

Get real

These are not easily assimilating populations. I dont blame them for some skepticism. At best a priority for young women/girls. Not this crap like Germany were Merkel is somehow unaware of the hordes of angry able fighting men entering her nation and being dispersed by her government everywhere.

If these governors were seeking to keep out Hispanics id be attacking them for ignorance but in light of all that has transpired I see this as being overly cautious in a way to make Obama angry and garner GOP support. But hey this issue of being wary of what 'refugees' we let in shouldnt just be a GOP thing. Democrats should care and stop acting like NO harm can from just letting anyone in.

Michigan is interesting due to it having th highest muslim population of any state

Still pandering, they can't actually do anything about it

Nope. California has the highest number, NY state has the highest percentage.

The town I grew up in I now a majority Arab. It is also the city with the most non working people per capita(according to the radio)

Good. I don't think we should allow a single one into the country unless we want more unemployment and similar attacks to what happens in Paris.

These people hav no intention of assimilating, they just want free shit and everybody to bend to suit their beliefs.

Pandering

Yeah. This is pretty much unenforceable. They have some ability to prevent immediate relocation, but that falls apart as legal status becomes more established. There is some ability to restrict travel on a case-by-case basis, but categorical restrictions fall apart.

I should add that its not that I would want a governor to go and say "come here"

Unless it was an internment camp for the military aged males

I have a problem with putting unpopular religious minorities in camps.

I do as well. I am in favor of putting all religious people in camps though.

Joking, that would mean there'd be less people out of the camps than in them.

I have an issue with fake refugees hiding behind people white guilted into being scared to call a religion shitty, unless said religion is Christianity or Judaism, then by all means they get shit on

So do these governors actually have the power to keep refugees out by law or is it political grandstanding?

It's not a bad idea until they can get more stringent background checks on them.

Legit ROFL

You can't, we did and do much more intrusive checks on supposed allies in Afghanistan and they still light us up.

Yeah. I mean to be honest I'm weary about letting them in in the first place.

So do these governors actually have the power to keep refugees out by law or is it political grandstanding?

It depends on a number of things.

First, they need to have such a power per their state constitutions. I haven't looked to see if they do. They can almost certainly refuse to participate in refugee programs, but it's much less likely that they can keep people out if they're moving around legally of their own volition. Second, even if they have that power, there's a question of whether this application of it runs afoul of the constitution (or certain elements of US Federal law). There's definitely a freedom of movement between states for citizens (see privileges and/or immunities clauses). There's probably a similar protection for noncitizens, but there's not been much case law on that point. I'm pretty sure my friends who were immigrants didn't have to jump through hoops when moving between states.

Another problem is that the doctrine of the dormant commerce clause severely restricts the ability of states to limit traffic between states, and there are some serious due process/discrimination problems with telling people who are legally within the US that they don't have rights of other people of a similar status due to their country of origin, especially when the rationale is explicitly couched in terms of religion.

TLDR: They probably don't, and its grandstanding.

After attacks in Paris, governors refuse to accept Syrian refugees

WASHINGTON -- At least 23 governors, expressing fears about terrorism, are taking action — through executive order, a request to federal officials or some other means — to prevent Syrian refugees from settling in their states.

Their stand in the name of public safety began Sunday and escalated quickly Monday, igniting a debate over whether states even have the power to refuse people based on their nationality.

The governors — in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin — were reacting to Friday’s attacks in Paris and the possibility that Syrian refugees seeking resettlement in the United States might include people with terrorist ties.

Twenty-two of the 23 governors are Republican.
