Hello all!! I am just wondering what age did you fight your first Muay Thai bout? I am 24 yrs old , my goal is to become a hoping to a pro fighter(after many amature fights a course),but I have not been able to fight a single bout yet. I had a fight scheduled back in March 2004, and another in May 2006 but due to circumstances,I wasnt able to attend either one.Since I live a more settled down life now ,I am quite sure that I can train on a regular basics,so I am quite sure that I will be able to fight soon.I have a strong passion for fighting and I traine twice a day ,six days a week(including weights and cardio);I am wondering if any of you guys started fighting after 24 years old,or am I to old now to start fighting?

hey,

my first muay thai fight was at age 20. i started training late. lost my first 3 fights before winning so don't quit right away if you loose...
i think eddie bravo started training BJJ at age 24 and now is teaching his own style.
IT'S NEVER TO LATE TO BE WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN!!!
good luck

kool thanks for the encouragement. I am training very hard ,twice a day six days a week now.I hear that most fighters do lost there first few fights, but I will never give up;if I do loose, then I know what I need to work on.

By the way are you still fighting now?

I fought my first fight when I was 14. You're certainly not too old to become a pro. There are enough examples of fighters who got in their prime around the age of 30. So you if you keep up the training you're right on track.

just train hard and when you feel as though you are ready take a fight.. im glad this isnt one of those "im 17 am i too old?" threads

I think there are a few of those becuase you get fighters like Vitor that were in the UFC at 19 years old. I personally am 20 so it can be a little bit discouraging when you see people younger than you in the big leagues.

Plus kids like drake dudley...

makes you think, if only i had started BJJ when i was 4 instead of 20...

im 21 and im glad that i got started when i did.. not too old.. the perfect age IMO is around 20-27 when people start fighting... just because your in the big show and you 18 doesnt make you a great fighter... like joe lauzons brother... he got his ass kicked.. they gave him a shot because his brother KOed jens pulver.. alot of people who debut have only been training for a year or 2 some people just take longer.. i would rather train more so that when i start fighting i will win.. not just jump into a fight when im not ready and get my ass kicked..

Exactly, only fight when you're ready. Don't go fighting because people tell to. Is it really important how old you where when you started? I don't think so, it's about trying to reach the goals you want to reach and having fun in the process doing so. Besides that, there are enough fighters who where very young when they started fighting and lost the will to fight later on in their career, throwing away years of training. Ignashov is a good example of this. And on the other side there are people like Couture and Hoost who were, to put it nicely, not so young anymore. So, keep training and if you want to make it, be sure to do everything you think is needed to do to become what you want to be, so when you look back at your career you won't regret it.

Thanks a lot guys!!You are have been VERY encouraging! You always hear about guys who start out when there are young I didnrt realize that there are many other fighters out there who started in their mid 20s are higher.I know that if they can do it than we can too!I wish you all the best of luck in your fighitng careers!Keep training hard!

Yo Slihn,

How long have you been training martial arts? I saw your profile and according to that you have been a busy person if it comes to martial arts.

im 16 now and i plan on fighting at 18 so ill have two good years of training MMA. but if u put your mind to it, you can start at a later age, theres guys at my gym that are 26 and just started and want to fight, and thrye doing fine at the moment, so go for it

Well off and on most of my life.We use to always move around when I was young so I got to train in Japanese (Akayama-Ryu) Jujitsu for a few months(when I was in fifth grade) then we moved. Then I got a few lessons of highly modifed TKD(all of the forma where taken out and we replaced the hand-strikes with boxing techniques) from by brother later on.At about 17 I started Ninpo Bugei(Budo Taijitsu);I was only able to train there for a few months, buts that is where I learn some basic grapplping skills.Me and my friends and family use to always grapple after work on the weekends for hours,I was always the smallest guy so I had to learn how to maneuver against people almost twice my size.A few years after that I travled overseas able to learned different techniques from different fighters from all over the world. We even created our own fight organization called ,"The Pit" which basically had NHB rules. At the end of 2004 I saw a "Thai Boxen" (Muay Thai) gym in Germany,I which became the first place I started training at almost consistently (many of the times I wasnt able to train because of my job). Now 2006 I have been finally able to train on a consistent basics.

I dont think age matters at all when you plan on having your MMA debut. You just want to be 110% ready to fight and win. Randy Couture made his MMA debut at age 34 i believe.

Many great MMA fighters didn't even start training before they were in their early twenties. Chronological age as such is of little importance. People peak at different ages.

I think the big issue here is desire. Do you have it at any age?

Im 23 and in the same boat as you... albeit training for MMA rather than Thai.
Fortunately I have got the best 2 or 3 trainers I could wish for woh help me and I think I am coming on in leaps and bounds because I have absorbed so much boxing and mma before ever deciding to train. Hopefully I will have a future in this game and by the time I am 30-34 who knows, I might have made some exciting fights.
The way I look at it is time is on my side, I have not burnt myself out and as long as I deicate myself by training 5-6 days a week then I am bang on track... fingers crossed!

Like I said I am incredibly lucky to be in the team that Im with.

For Pro? You better get your ass in gear then. My advice; just train and fight a few first before you try to make a career out of it.

for the record, my first fight was a few months ago and I'm 29. I'm one of the youngest at my gym that trains to fight. The oldest was 41, he'd been training for less than a year and won his first fight by K.O.

So your never to old to start, but if your going to go Pro, you better get on it NOW!
