I do kickboxing and today I was sparring with a friend of mine, who's starting out with martial arts, at the park. So I was helping him.

Then a boxer came and asked if he could spar with us, so I said yes. His jabs were fast and he had good head movement. I couldn't land any head shots, so I threw mostly bodyshots.

I was wondering if there's any drills I could do to hit boxers or guys that have good head movement? Because everytime I threw a head shot, he weaved to his right, leaving his body open, so I just kept throwing right hooks to his body. However, his jabs are also really fast and I ate most of em. So I was wondering if there are any drills I could do to better my jab defense? His jabs were really fast, but they weren't that powerful though, which is why I just threw body shots while eating his jabs. The sparring match was boxing rules btw.

>_> Thanks if you reply. ^_^

Well, you're already doing what I would've done; throw body shots. If you can't hit the head, hit the body. Was this boxing or kickboxing, because if kicks were allowed, you could've stayed out of his punching range and keep hitting him with leg kicks.

You should also practice your own head movement. Slip his jabs and/or practice countering. A good straight counter should discourage him from throwing too many jabs.

Also if you could use his head movement against him if it is kickboxing. Does he bob a lot to your hooks? Then try timing a knee after throwing a hook if he does.

Work on a double end bag, that'll help you with people who move their head a lot during boxing. As for as jabs, if they are really fast, what you want to do is parry it (quick tap) with your rear hand. You also need to practice your footwork. Practice moving forward (lounging) and backward in your boxing stance, you should be very light on your toes. Jump roping helps develop good footwork. Combine that parry technique and good footwork - you'll be hard to hit. Best way to train for this, is really to spar a lot. Hope this helps.

Are you talking about jsut punching or can you kick. When I used to Thai box I fought many boxers and I used a good front kick to keep them away from me.

Oh, sorry, should've made this clearer. It was boxing rules since I don't have shin guards. Thanks for the advice guys. Also, is this a double end bag?

Yes thats a double end bag. Try different sizes too. There are some smaller ones that swings back and forth faster and is harder to hit, but try mastering the regular size first before going on to the smaller ones.

so let me get this straight, you're a kickboxer who sparred a boxer under boxing rules? being a good kickboxer doesn't make you a good boxer.

as for drills, do boxing excercises. shadowbox a lot with only punches, skip rope, run on the balls of your feet, and also as the others said, double end bag work. practice your footwork too.

The other day a buddy of mine and I were golfing and a guy came over and asked if he could play volleyball with us....

If you play someone else's game and by someone else's rules do not be surprised when you lose (badly).

If your deep seeded desire is to learn to box then I would go to a boxing gym and learn. If your deep seeded goal is to get your egg scrambled I'd go box some guy I don't know in the park.

You did the right thing by going to the body. You should've countered with your right if his jab was really that weak. Take boxing, not kickboxing if you want to learn how to throw hands.

Anyway, as someone else said, saying yes to a stranger in the park who asks to spar with you is a guaranteed ass-whooping. Boxing can attract sadists. I know some boxers who will go to the park with 2 sets of gloves and look for people to "spar" with because they aren't allowed to recklessly hurt people in the gym.

I think the guy was toying with you if he just slipping your punches and throwing fast jabs without following up with the right.

Yup. my thoughts exactly.

its best to just say whatever you are doing is "defensive" in nature. then ppl leave you alone.

I dont think it is bad to spar boxing rules boxers have good hands and it could help improve
yours not every kickboxer is a good kicker some have very good hands. Anyway I didnt see any mention of working a feint or timing his head movement a lot of boxers I have sparred with do the same movement with there head every time you punch, work on timing his movement and countering would be helpful.

Well yeah the important stuff has already been said. If you're going to spar someone you don't know, it should at least be a fellow student at your gym.

On the more related note: like someone already said, work on your counters. Get a partner and drill AGGRESSIVE counters, like parrying a jab and coming back with a 1-2 right out of the parry. Drill slipping to either side of the jab and throwing from the inside. Simply going tit-for-tat, body shots for jabs, is one way to do it.. but if you can get in for that one body shot, why not go all in and throw a body body head combination? Run those simple drills, then ask your instructor for more drills you and your partner can do on your own.

.

What kind of park is this!?

i find that boxing and muay thai boxing to have definite differences. As said before, getting outboxed by a boxer when you are a kickboxer.. welll...

boxers can duck and crouch and often do so. if you constantly use that in muay thai, i guareentee you'll be tagged with a knee to the face eventually.

next time, fight the boxer with kickboxing rules and go nuts on the leg kicks :icon_twis

you'll know if you've dun real gud if he falls over due to a numb leg. Man! I've seen that once and I'll never get over how amazing that scene was.

Learn to switch your stance often in sparing. If body, head, and leg kicks are involved use them to set up a punch to the face.

Not every boxer is clueless about kicks or knees. A boxer with knowledge of knees/kicks can frustrate a MT guy in the same way that a wrestler with knowledge of BJJ can frustrate a BJJ guy.

Even if they are clueless, you'd better be an extremely proficient kicker to keep a boxer from closing the distance. Unless you're a K-1 type of kicker, the odds of you effectively punishing a run-of-the-mill boxer with kicks before he can close the distance and lay you flat with 4-5 punches in a row are pretty low.

A long time ago, I was getting out-kicked at a karate tournament. His teammates were annoying douchebags, so I closed the distance and planted 2 rights on his chin. I got disqualified, but so much for his kicks. Luckily for him, that was before I took up boxing.

Boxers will win 9 out of 10 times against kickboxers unless there is kicking below the waste aloud. Like Rinksterk pointed out keep out of his range and wear him down with low roundhouses. If your not aloud to use them then you really havent got much chance of out punching the boxer with technique so my advice would be to go get inside and trade hooks and uppercuts with him.
