How many of you guys are doing strength and conditioning in addition to a heavy training schedule?

If so, how many days a week, what do you do, and when do you work out (before/after grappling)?

A related question: How many of you have jobs/families/are in school?

I find it baffling the amount of time a lot of people are able to put into training. I don't think I could find time for a S&C regimen without the use of a time machine. I barely have time to teach/train as it is. I'd love to do more. I'd love to teach and train full time. But that's all not in the cards.

I train 4-5 days a week and immediately after BJJ I go to the gym and do weight training. Frankly, I really think this has helped me prevent injuries so I'm glad i picked up weight training after so many years off from it.

I have a full time Professional job but what really helps is being single with no kids, if i had those responsibilities still, my old ass wouldn't even be doing BJJ.

Agreed. I have a wife. a 1yr old son, another on the way. A full time job. I really dont have time to do any of it. Some people could say go right after work to a gym. Maybe. But to have to wait around 10-15 mins for a machine, that, to me, is not an effective way to work out or spend my time. The most I can do, is training at home. Uchikomi with an inner tube. A kettlebell and some bodyweight exercises is all I really have time for. Its not much, but its a start

This is my struggle. I have a full time job, a side job (just a couple of shifts a month), and a live in gf... Getting my schedule right has been a work in progress for a long time now.

Do you do anything for muscle endurance and explosion other than rolling? If not, do you find this to be enough to get you competition ready?

I do BJJ about 5x/wk, and try to do S&C 3x wk. I work FT and have a g/f so it is sometimes difficult.

Is it purely lifting weights? What's your routine? By the way, not sure if you saw it in the other thread but I really wanted to thank you for reaching out to Edwin for me... Much appreciated!

Is it usually on the same days or do you do S&C usually on days you're not grappling?

Was training 3-4 days a week serious sparring rolling just got accepted to med-school........In related news I'm selling my Gis.

It's purely weight lifting, nothing super heavy. basic routine would be:
Mon- Chest, triceps
Tues- back, biceps
Wed- legs, shoulders
Thurs-Off
4 sets, 15-20 reps of each then I mix up the exercises every other month.
I don't spend more than 45 minutes at the gym, in and out with no chit chat in between sets.
I'm glad I was able to help, I knew Edwin wouldn't mind, he's one heck of a guy and competitor, I'm fortunate to be training with this group. Just pay it forward. :)

i alternate judo/jiujitsu every day of the week.(m,w,f,s judo,t,t,sat bjj)
i train at the gym 3 days a week 2 days strength, one day power.
strength;
squat
deadlift
bench
push press
row
pull up. all 3 sets of 5

power,
cleans
box jumps
medicine ball slams
bench throws
explosive one arm cable row.

i do core work on both days.

I would say 2 out of the 3days are NOT on BJJ days. IE I do BJJ Mon-Thurs and Saturday, and do S&C Wed/Friday/Sunday usually. On the day it is the same, I usually do the S&C before work in the morning...

Jesus, bro... Are you ever not sore?

I train 3-4 days a week, have a FT job and a fiance. I try to make to they gym to lift once or twice a week. It's usually only once but I lift pretty heavy and workout to failure so I feel like it helps me maintain my current muscle mass and strength levels.

It's definitely tough to do when you work full time.

Most of my S&C is cardio mixed w/ "rounds" of BJJ related exercises, IE a lot of push/pull stuff and explosions

People also need to add S&C based on their goals...

Do you just do BJJ for fun and to lose weight? Maybe a little S&C along w/ BJJ will be good.

Do you wanna compete often and win at a high level? A lot of S&C may be necessary. Honestly at Blue belt and up in the Worlds etc, only about 8-10 people out of the huge divisions have a real shot at winning the division based on skill and the effort/time put into training to win at those levels.

I work full time and train BJJ 5 days a week (Tu/W/Th nights, Sat/Sun at noon). I lift twice a week at lunch, usually on Monday and Friday. I try to get to the gym at lunch once or twice more per week for either LSD running or some type of conditioning circuit (burpees, jumping rope, etc). More often than not I don't condition much other than actual BJJ bc I tend to want to skip class at night because I'm so tired from my earlier workouts.

i work around 20hours a week.
live with my (very understanding) girlfriend and am a student.
i take nights off as i feel i need to (once every 2-4 weeks)
and dial back the training when i have an assignment due or exam coming up.
my body starts to feel a bit tired during the week but can recover pretty well at weekends when i dont have study to do and the training is a bit lighter, having a good diet and drinking lots of water helps.
and like i said if i feel like i need to i'll skip a session, but making them all 2/3 weeks is better than training less every week.
also note ive only been training bjj like this for the last few months before that i used to have tuesday as a day off and train bjj thursday mma saturday.

I agree... I've been thinking lately that adding three days a week is definitely help in tournys and could be a bit of a plateau buster for me.
