Marketability in mma is a combination of fighting ability/personality and looks, by looks you don't necessary have to be good looking although it helps but you just have to have a certain look that appeals.

Look at these guys for example they all have a memorable look to them that keeps viewers/fans interested in them. Would people really care about machida if he wasn't half japanase and looked like barao? or if Carano looked like shayna blaszler? No one cares about guys that look like your everyday cage fighter like matt brown for example.

    Notable mentions Bendo, Koscheck, Overeem.

True I like fighters with original looks .. Rather than the guy covered in tats, nail polish and a mowhawk who just screams "cage fighter"

I think a big part of it is knowing your look and playing into it.

So many fighters could benefit from accentuating the looks and traits that they already have to become more polarizing. For instance, a 'less girly' WMMA fighter can still be marketable by playing up that angle (Cyborg for example) as a fighting machine.

I think it's actually something that worked well for Fedor, because he sort of played up the role of the silent Russian with no emotions.

I am surprised more fighters do not go out of their way to build their own brand.

How is GSP unique? Being clean cut?
Jardine has a more unique look than GSP imo.

Probably not as much as him being a behemoth, but a smaller guy can still market his traits. Taking Barao; a blood thirsty madman little crazy dude angle would probably work well for him. You know, like that crazy little guy in that movie with the Rock:

The real idea behind positioning is that you want to make it as easy as possible for the audience to stereotype, label and categorize you. You want to make it so easy in fact that you become a caricature of yourself (Rampage, Sonnen, Werdum, Jones seems to be doing it recently).

If I was helping Cain with marketing, I'd probably try to get him to play up a 'scary gangsta' angle. With the tattoo and his cold killer demeanor, it would make him easier to package and distribute.

People hesitate to open packages that they don't recognize. They may flat out refuse to open a package they recognize and don't like, but the important thing is that they have a strong emotional reaction that motivates them to be decisive.

Great idea. Get Cain to pretend to be the opposite of who he actually is. Then when he starts losing all of the fans that like him because he is a genuine guy, Javier Mendez can tell him to go 'win some fans' by going to check out his opponent that he just beat the crap out of.

Maybe that's why so many fighters get tats, to make themselves more memorable or distinctive.

Nobody remembers that white guy with the shaved head who fought on that undercard recently (remember him?). Everybody remembers that guy with the tattoo of Rosie O'Donnell.
