That will probably get a stupid answer. But I've got to ask anyway. What effect does dipping (skoal) have on training? I've been dipping for about 2 years now, not very heavily, but consistently. It does seem to keep my weight down, but I'm curious as to whether the nicotine is harmful in any way to my cardio, etc. I quit for about a month earlier this year, and didn't really notice any difference except that I slept a little better. I rarely do it during the day before training, usually after dinner, and I'm otherwise very healthy (almost never drink, eat fairly well, crazy exercise). So besides the long term problems, anyone have any insight?

Why do you say it helps you keep your weight down?

Well obviously I can control my weight with or without it, but it does have proven weight loss effects. That's not really my concern, I use it because I like it :)

I do know that a shitload of people in the military dip pretty much all day and they usually work 12-16 hour days. One of my buddies has the highest PT score possible in the Army and he is an avid dipper. He's actually ran a few marathons too. I could see how it could keep your weight down because instead of craving something and overeating, you could just dip instead. It is obviously a much better alternative for cardio than smoking is.

there are no stupid questions, only stupid people who ask questions.

chances are the nicotine (which is a stimulant) reduces hunger, so you eat less. the other thing im thinking is you have an oral fixation since you're used to dipping. since you have this habit of always having something in your mouth, you use food if you arent dipping.

but to answer your question, yes it affects your cardio. that stuff is full of toxins, carcinogens, etc.... poison basically. your body is using energy and other resources to neutralize these poisons, when it could be putting that effort towards recovery from workouts, protein synthesis, etc...

This post is the winner. Congratulations.

does weed have the same affect?

Maybe if you get mouth cancer and half your face is removed, its possible to move down weight class. It's good for cutting that way

The only reason they dip in the military, is because smoking will effect scores. Either way it doesn't make dipping any better. Both will have a long term derailment in health. I dipped for a while in the military, why? Because smoking killed running times, dip didnt. Doesn't mean its a justification.

Christ:icon_chee Are you serious? Anytime smoke goes in your lungs it has a effect. i mean seriously why even ask that?

Nick Diaz and plenty of other fighters would certainly disagree with you :icon_chee

Uhhh... No, I doubt they would. Diaz thinks weed helps him concentrate. Show me where he said it was awesome for his lungs and cardio.
