I know I should see a doctor. I already made an appointment.

So my knee's been effed up for about 3 weeks now. I've been doing some self-prescribed rehab of a joint formula, biking, stretching, and keeping away from high impact activities and high loading (no running, no squatting). During this time, I could easily feel it creaking when I bent it, and it was bad enough that you could hear it. My left knee creaks, too, but not *nearly* as bad as my right.

Until yesterday.

Yesterday, I did a workout of sledgehammers, jump rope, and sprawling maneuvers that probably should have hurt my knee. My knee, however, was magically fixed. I don't mean that it felt a little better, I mean that, over the span of one hour, my knee went from hurting more than it ever did, to being in better shape than it ever was. Only my right knee, too. My left knee is the exact same. There's absolutely no creaking in my right knee when I bend it.

To make matters more interesting, a strange piece of unknown material found its way to under my skin. There's no cut, so the object musn't be foreign. I can move it around, but not very far. It seems to be floating at the very end of where my leg, when bent, still remains horizontal.

What in the world just happened there?

It's hard to see in my head what you are describing. My knee "creaks" and feels like it "pops" out of place sometimes. When I say it feels like it pops out of place, it isn't painful, but awkward. After this happens, there is a "bulge" on the side of my knee where it felt like it popped. My older brother said it was floating cartilage. He acted like he knew what he was talking about as he's had knee surgery, but I don't know. Is this similar to what you are talking about.

I've never had my knee pop. I've had it creak when bending, and crack often, but never has its apparent position changed. And no bulges for me.

But like I said, now it's fine. Even during my best of days (after I started working out), bending my knee would result in a non-trivial amount of creaking. Now it's completely gone.

It sounds like you have a "floater" in there, some piece of tissue/bone/cartilage that is loose and worked it's way to a place where it isn't interfering for the time being. I would stick with seeing the doc.
