A solution for the wrestler vs. striker imbalance - fence grabs allowed for the striker

It's overpowered to be a wrestler at the top level, this strategy needs a nerf. The imbalance is basically: unlimited spam of TDs and chain wrestling, tiring out the striker and making him constantly fear the takedown, giving the wrestler every advantage in the book.

The UFC needs to apply a patch to the current rules to revise the dynamics of these high level fights.

The solution:

Each fighter is designated as a 'striker' or a 'wrestler' prior to the match. They decide their own designations.

Strikers are allowed to grab the fence. But they are only allowed to attempt 1 takedown per round and are given a maximum of 1 minute control time on the ground for that takedown. These limits are to reduce the ability of wrestlers to declare themselves as strikers to abuse fence grabbing.

Wrestlers are not constrained in control time or number of takedown attempts, but they are not allowed to grab the fence.

With this new ruleset, strikers don't have to be afraid of constantly being taken down. They are relatively safe near the cage, and more in danger near the middle of the octagon. This is more balanced and will ensure more action standing up. It also does not negate the ability of wrestlers to do their thing, but it eliminates the victory of an elite wrestler as a foregone conclusion.

This is not that big of a rule change, since fence grabbing already happens when Herb Dean decides to allow it.

To differentiate between the two, strikers wear shorts and wrestlers wear leotards.

Thoughts?

No, it’s fine how it is. Frustrating to watch a fighter to get ragdolled, but that’s a part of the game.

I think they can update the rules for quicker stand ups or resets from the clinch may improve fights. Something like a 30 second rule to advance position.

Considering only 2/8 male champs are considered primarily wrestlers, I don’t think the problem is as widespread or “unfair” as you make it out to be. Also adding more artificial limitations only serves make the fight less “real.”

Well, for the manlet divisions this isn't a big problem, I agree. For 155 and 170, definitely is. MW lacks elite wrestlers (actual elite wrestlers). It could in theory be a problem for LHW but post-USADA cardio is in the toilet. HW has 1 punch KO power and similarly bad cardio.

Significantly more Champs are primarily strikers (Izzy, Francis, Yan, Volk, Fig) than primarily wrestlers (Usman, Glover)

Do Bronx is a BJJ guy and don't even bring up Sterling as champ unless he beats Yan again.

Your "logic" of wrestling being unfair and overpowered does not hold true and your suggested rules are garbage as the UFC isn't a video game with player classes.

Gotta give the inferior fighters a shot at winning I suppose

U srs? The former champ was Khabib and Islam will be the next champ. And see my post above, I admit it's less of a problem for manlet divisions.

Grapplers , wrestlers & Bjj guys have definetly no advantage with the ruleset we have now. What will you say if every round has to start on the ground and the striker has to work to get up and bring the fight where it suits him better?

So just because it could be worse, that means it's not bad? No.
