how do you teach someone to defeat your game? recently my class has turned into a dissection of my own game, and i dont have a student who can duplicate what i do in order for me to teach my defense.

I know you said instructors only but as I student I don't think it is so much how to duplicate your game as it is they are trying figure out a way of feeling competitive and get to get a sense they can make it to your level. They will not be able to duplicate what you do. The best you can do is give them tools for the tool box and help them find their way.

i am not an instructor, i did however teach class at my former gym from time to time ( to blues). So this is my humble opinion:

I taught my game because to be honest as a 4 stripe blue belt i didn't feel comfortable teaching techniques that i didn't use often and didn't find sucess with often.

HOWEVER, this is one of the reasons why i don't think that a person should open a gym untill he is a very seasoned purple belt. and this is why

Your job as a jiu jitsu instructor is not to make carbon copes of yourself or create guys that can beat you. Your goal should be to be able to guide different body types, styles, and mentalities to become the best jiu jitsu practioner that they could be. You are a guide for THEIR journey of their jiu jitsu.

i just want to improve their game. so when they ask me about the issues they have with me while rolling and i try and recreate that situation. but the isssue is i dont understand what makes my half guard any different so i cant teach a defense without an ukideshi who can recreate that position. i have taught many half guard escapes and yet in live rolling my students get very frustrated because they cannot seem to make them work

Different things work best for different people.

Record what you are doing. Take it home and see exactly what you are doing that stops them from escaping.

Often when we get "seasoned" we do things without thinking about them. I would say this is what you are doing. When you watch it on video you will see what it is you are doing and be able to teach it.
