Pretty good old film about the Titanic. Has anyone else seen it? Pretty crazy how close the SS Californian was. RMS Carpathia, SS Frankfurt, and Mount Temple responded to Titianic’s distress signals. Frankfurt was pretty far out and Mount Temple got held up by an ice field.

The Carpathia 58 miles out made its way to the sinking Titanic. The SS Californian was the closest but wireless operator had retired for the night and shut off communication.

They crew of the Californian did witness the distress rockets by the Titanic.

And if you were on the Titanic at the time how would you have reacted?

It would suck pretty bad to drown in freezing cold water. The head baker Charles Joughin treaded the water for two hours and lived. He also drank alcohol so that probably helped him stay warm.

Rough timeline of sinking

It's interesting how many of the scenes in the Cameron version are virtually identical to this one. Like with the band playing as the ship sinks, for instance.

Overall, it's not so much an epic and melodramatic love-story as the Cameron one is. It's more a story of survival, about the virtue of presenting a stoic, dignified yet still humane appearance even under such tragic and dire circumstances.

Yeah the line delivery and facial acting was on point. I enjoyed it more than the Cameron version. I find the scenes with the wireless operators very tense.

And the desperation to get the collapsible boat B ready was felt. Under that amount of stress, those crewman must have given it their all.

You know what's a good movie? Children of Men.

I would have drank a lot of rum or brandy and helped women children first.
Dying drunk is better than sober I reckon
