So, I don't post much, but I come here and read the threads. I figured some of you guys might get a kick out of this.
I train with a group of guys. Nothing really structured, as there are no schools really close, but we've got some guys that go to Atlanta to train in BJJ and a couple of Boxers. We get together in a gym here, pull out the mats, and work out. Everyone generally helps everyone else with what they are better at and it makes for a good workout. Some guys are rolling while others are sparring, that sort of thing. I have a background in several different arts, so I kind of just work my own style that is a combo of things that I have learned over the years but it focuses primarily on MT and Submission wrestling with other useful things thrown in where they fit.
So, we had a new guy come in the other day, saw us working out, and was interested in getting involved. Seems like a pretty decent guy, so he should fit in nicely. At any rate, he wrestled apparantly all the way through high school, and from what I saw today, is pretty decent at it. Now, let me also say that the guy is a monster. Easily 6'3 / 270 lbs and pretty solid. I am 5'10 / 180-185 lbs, so lets just say I was the smaller guy, which I am used to because most of the guys I train with are 220+.
So, he came in today, and I told him if he wanted, I would run through some of the basics of fighting on the ground with positioning, a few submissions, movement, etc. He told me that being that he was a wrestler, he was pretty comfortable on the ground, so we should just go live and see where each other were. I thought that was fine. So, we lock up, and I knew my little ass was hitting the mat quick. When he got a hold of me, pushed my head down, I turned, and pulled guard pretty easily (easy except for the fact that my short little legs were having trouble keeping this guy in guard). So I get set in guard, and start to try and feel things out (this only was about 2 or 3 seconds after hitting the ground), and all of a sudden, he loosened his grip and said "I win" and went to get up. I have to admit I snickered a little at this point, but I had to explain to him that pulling guard does not equal being defeated, and that in MMA, you have to actually beat your opponent by KO or submission. He thought that me pulling guard equals him pinning me, so in his mind, I was done. We continued, and I eventually was able to get him off balance, and move to his back from guard and sink in a choke (kinda made my little ass smile to beat someone that has about 100 lbs on me).
At any rate, the guy has some raw talent and should pick up pretty quickly. Hell, his size alone can definately work to his advantage. I just got a kick out of today. I have never had someone stop in my guard and tell me that they won.
Any ways, thought some of you might get a kick out of that.
