6 missing climbers believed dead

Terrible news... Saw it on the local news this morning. Mt. Ranier is less than an hour drive from me.

I see that mountain everyday. Have zero desire to climb it and this is why.

The weather has been fantastic this week. Wonder how they could have disappeared.

Sad news. I drive over there every few weeks and hike around.

some of the responses to this thread are fucked up. six people died. have some respect.

They fell over 3000ft, as indicated by the location of the discovered gear versus their last know position. Given that it was 2 guides and 4 climbers, it's far more likely that it was a result of rock/ice fall taking them out as opposed to a slip and fall scenario.

Dang. I'm praying for their loved ones..

That's awful. Do you think its possible to extract their bodies?

Probably. There's a lot of speculation they may not be able to, but I honestly think that's because that's the only essence of drama that the media can get from the story at this point. This isn't the Himalaya, there should be a stable window at some point later in the season to get the bodies.

People that pay guides to take them climbing are generally a well-to-do class of people, I'm sure their families will have both the drive and financial resources to ensure a recovery.

From 1 to 10 how hard is the climb on this mountain?
Ten being the hardest.

Too subjective. For that group on that route on that day, obviously 10+.

You're the only climber I know so when I read the headline yesterday I thought "oh, I hope it's not Josh."

I'm glad it wasn't you.

Fuck you guys. I'm no mountain climbing expert but why would anyone take on a icy face of Mount Rainier in the summer? You'd figure the ice would be beginning to thaw and become unstable.

Any Washington state hikers/ alpinist care to explain?
